Optimist clubs of Portland will
honor 90 students from approxi
mately 15 Portland area high
schools at a banquet on Novem
ber 15 as a part of their annual
Youth Appreciation week.
Representing six fields in stu
dent activities, scrolls of com
mendation will be presented to
Bob Heldfont for student body
affairs; Ron Marrs for musical
ability; Chris Swan for leader
ship in athletics; Mary Birke-
land, rally girl leader; Brian
McCune for scholarship; and Ce
cile O’Rourke for work in the
field of journalism.
Reminding citizens of the com
munity that young people are
fine citizens is the purpose of
Youth Appreciation week, ac
cording to John Stuckey, student
adviser. The banquet honoring
the students is the highlight of
the week
session, and a tour of the
facilities. Transportation
will be provided to Christie
school at Marylhurst col
lege, for the same type of
program.
Other activities will be held
in between until March 11 and
12, during Spring Vacation.
On March 11, there will
be agency workshops at
Westminister Presbyterian
Church, and on March 12,
there will be a tour of fa
cilities at the Jewish Com
munity Center. At the Com
munity Center students will
be interviewed by volun
teers as to what type of so
cial work they prefer.
Students indicating intent will
be asked to work with an indi
vidual social worker on a one-
to-one basis. Relationship and
field experience will exist for
two months, or a period to in
clude 3 or 4 meetings.
Students signed up for the So
cial Careers Program are Joyce
Ainsworth, June Ammon, Sher
rie Arehart, Jill Bergman, and
Beverly Brooks.
Also listed are: Terri Caul
field, Gail Dana, Marla Gaaren-
stroom, Laurie Gilbert, Laura
Gustav, and Diane Heaney.
Concluding the list are: Bea
Johnson, Debbie Knauss, Sonya
Manning, Kathy McGregor, Syl
via McMillan, Cheryl Rogers,
Shelly Taylor, Barbara Wilkins,
and Jorge Bacelis.
The program is designed to be
held other than school hours
and with respect for confiden
tiality of agency clients. Initial
interviews with the students for
backgrounds of interest and
hobbies, orientation, small dis
cussion groups, working arrange
ments with an individual social
worker on a one-to-one basis,
and supervisory agency person
nel are available to the stu
dents.
A summer work placement
will follow for the interested
students.
