4 November 10, 1967 THE GRANTONIAN Social Work seminar begins by Steph Daly Social Work Seminar, open to interested juniors, will begin with an introductory meet­ ing at Portland State college on Wednesday. Speaking will be Dr. Gordon Hearn, Dean of the graduate School of Social Work at Portland State; Dr. Dan Jen­ nings, School of Social Work, and Carolyn Selling, Executive Director of Social Work careers in Oregon. On December 9, at the Donald E. Fremont 284-8703 Optimist clubs of Portland will honor 90 students from approxi­ mately 15 Portland area high schools at a banquet on Novem­ ber 15 as a part of their annual Youth Appreciation week. Representing six fields in stu­ dent activities, scrolls of com­ mendation will be presented to Bob Heldfont for student body affairs; Ron Marrs for musical ability; Chris Swan for leader­ ship in athletics; Mary Birke- land, rally girl leader; Brian McCune for scholarship; and Ce­ cile O’Rourke for work in the field of journalism. Reminding citizens of the com­ munity that young people are fine citizens is the purpose of Youth Appreciation week, ac­ cording to John Stuckey, student adviser. The banquet honoring the students is the highlight of the week session, and a tour of the facilities. Transportation will be provided to Christie school at Marylhurst col lege, for the same type of program. Other activities will be held in between until March 11 and 12, during Spring Vacation. On March 11, there will be agency workshops at Westminister Presbyterian Church, and on March 12, there will be a tour of fa­ cilities at the Jewish Com­ munity Center. At the Com­ munity Center students will be interviewed by volun­ teers as to what type of so­ cial work they prefer. Students indicating intent will be asked to work with an indi­ vidual social worker on a one- to-one basis. Relationship and field experience will exist for two months, or a period to in­ clude 3 or 4 meetings. Students signed up for the So­ cial Careers Program are Joyce Ainsworth, June Ammon, Sher­ rie Arehart, Jill Bergman, and Beverly Brooks. Also listed are: Terri Caul­ field, Gail Dana, Marla Gaaren- stroom, Laurie Gilbert, Laura Gustav, and Diane Heaney. Concluding the list are: Bea Johnson, Debbie Knauss, Sonya Manning, Kathy McGregor, Syl­ via McMillan, Cheryl Rogers, Shelly Taylor, Barbara Wilkins, and Jorge Bacelis. The program is designed to be held other than school hours and with respect for confiden­ tiality of agency clients. Initial interviews with the students for backgrounds of interest and hobbies, orientation, small dis­ cussion groups, working arrange­ ments with an individual social worker on a one-to-one basis, and supervisory agency person­ nel are available to the stu­ dents.
