January 20, 1967 THEGRANTONIAN 3 Voters' Aid Presidential candidates offer major qualification What is your major qualification for the office you are running for? Why? I believe that my major quali fication would be National Hon or Society Commissioner. Hold ing this office has given me a great sense of responsibility to ward the students of Grant high school. Serving as Program Commissioner, I am not only re sponsible for the smooth run ning of each meeting, but also to the society itself. Also an important qualifica tion to me is the spirit, pride, and respect I have in my school. —Bob Blackford Bob Blackford Mike Hoffman Vice-president hopefuls propose school revisions Kim Patterson would be to help stimulate a spirit of loyalty, respect, and pride in our students. —Joanne Obinger This term strife has arisen be tween the General and Executive Councils. One of my main ob jectives will be to bring these councils closer so that the road to government will run smooth er. This can be accomplished with able leaders who can com municate both ideas and friend ship to this representative body. —Kimberly Patterson The experience I gained in serving as a student body offi cer last year has given me the proper perspective on the Stu dent Body Presidency. I worked with the council and learned that cooperation is important to get things done. The President’s job entails accepting and some times placing responsibility, and the weakness of past councils has been the inability to com plete worthwhile tasks. I would like to see a council of “doers.” —Mike Hoffman I think the best qualification I have is an active interest in student government, and a reali zation that there is a great deal wrong with it. I think I have demonstrated both these qualifi cations with active participation in Boys’ League and the General Council. I have entered student elections and have held mem bership in interest clubs. These qualifications plus a plan for strengthening student govern ment are all I claim. —Brad Owens The major qualification I have for this office is my experience in the affairs of student govern ment since my freshman year. As Sophomore Class President I worked very closely with the Student Body President and Vice-president on all matters concerning the Executive Coun- cil, especially the important Spring Carnival. My positions of leadership, I believe, indicate an ability to successfully and re sponsibly extend the superb work of the Fall Executive —Gary Whitted Council. Brad Owens General council'president campaign reveals conflict Andy Gill This office affords one of the greatest chances for a person to show initiative. I have always felt this way and this is one of my reasons for running for of fice. I don’t believe we are in need of great changes, it is the small actions that make the dif ference. —Andy Gill The General Council is not a farce. Much of the legislation initiated in this body is killed or I feel that the problem of stu dent body government at Grant cannot be improved by specific changes. It functions quite well now according to the way it op erates. The main improvement that I would strive for is to try to improve the communication between the student and student government. —Janet Bader Forum Jack Mishler drastically modified in the Exec utive Council. As president, I would seek modifications in the Constitution and general attitude so that General Council legisla tion would have a chance to ben efit the student body. —Leyton Jump What specific changes are needed to make student body govern ment at Grant effective? Capabilities of league leaders cited Student government will nev er be effective unless the stu dents recognize the lack of pride in our school. Grant is worthy of an undying spirit because of many reasons. And with a stable basis to begin with, I could probably make one of the most progressive General Councils in some time. It could act as a unit. —Jack Mishler What have you done for the schol that makes you qualified to run for office? I have tried to participate in as many things as possible. Until this year, I have not had much responsibility in leadership posi tions, but I have enjoyed it thus far. I feel I have a little exper ience in the workings of the school. —Nora Mumford As sophomore Girls’ League President and also working with Girls’ League, I have learned the activities of Girls’ League and the responsibilities of its Presi dent. I also feel that being Art Staff Co-chairman and junior class treasurer gives me back ground. —Nancy O’Brien My participation on the as sembly committee, on the Stu dent Guidance Commission, and in Girls’ League has made me aware of what Grant is. Having worked on these committees in the past qualifies me, I believe, for the position of Girls’ League President. —Mary Parker VOTE... Intelligently
