lively Sounds promising Family Promise of Lincoln County will hold its fi rst A Taste of Art and Wine event on Sunday, March 8, in Lincoln City, off ering guests the chance to enjoy a few luxuries while raising funds to help homeless families. Th e event, running from 4 to 6 pm at the Beach Club Events Center, will include a wine tasting, appetizers and a silent auction of art items donated by local artists, including some from Taft 7-12 students. Already donated are pieces including an encaustic painted in tinted beeswax, a quilted wall hanging, locally made jewelry and a fun pottery piece. Tickets are $20 and include a commemorative Family Promise wine glass donated by Waddell and Reed. Th e tickets can be purchased online by searching for “A Taste of Art and Wine” at Eventbrite.com or from many board members and Family Promise staff . Proceeds from the event will help Family Promise assist in getting homeless families back on their feet and living independently in their own homes. More than 80 percent of the Family Promise graduate families are still living independently and successfully a year after leaving the program. “Even though we have been operating for fi ve years successfully, funding has been a little diffi cult this year so we are hoping for a great turnout,” said Executive Director Elizabeth Reyes. “Th ere are still plenty of families and especially kids who need our help and we need fi nancial help to do that.” Family Promise of Lincoln County is a nonprofi t that provides shelter, meals and comprehensive assistance to homeless and low-income families with children in Lincoln County while they seek to achieve sustainable independent living. Th is is achieved through a collaborative community eff ort and based on a proven successful national model that partners with local congregations and social service agencies to provide practical and eff ective services. A party with the luau factor Delicious Hawaiian food, live music and dancing will be on off er this Sunday, March 1, as the parents of the Taft High School Class of 2020 host a community luau to raise funds for grad night. Held in the Taft High Commons, the evening will start at 5 pm with a Hawaiian feast from Oceans Apart Catering. Michael Dane and friends will perform Hawaiian music with guitar, steel guitar, drums and vocals, accompanied by guest hula dancers and drummers. A fun and delicious dessert dash will feature a wide variety of tasty treats, sponsored by My Petite Sweet and other donors. Meanwhile, a silent auction will give guests the chance to snag items like massage certifi cates, sweatshirts, glass fl oats and even a leaf blower. And three choice prices are up for grabs in the Grad Night Fundraiser Raffl es. Win a $500 gift certifi cate from Meredith Lodging, with tickets just $20 each. Or, try your luck in the raffl e drawing for a Stihl chainsaw MS250 — those tickets are $10 each. Can’t decide? Try the 50/50 general raffl e, with tickets $2 each or three for $5. ORESTIS KARAMANLIS Newport Public Library’s Wild Family Wednesday is inviting kids from kindergarten through fi fth grade to Spin a Yarn this Wednesday, March 4. Kids accompanied by a parent or guardian will get to create yarn crafts such as pom-poms, God’s eye, tassels and more to take home. All supplies are provided. Library staff will also be on hand to recommend a picture book, new fi ction book or other reading material to check out.
