Yachats logs a
pair of holiday
performances
Savor the sweet sound of Christmas
The Oregon Coast Sweet Adelines will
share the joy of Christmas on Thursday,
Dec. 12, with a festive performance at the
American Legion in Newport.
The performance, featuring both both
traditional and contemporary songs, will
start at 7 pm at 424 W Olive Street.
Refreshments will be served and donations
would be appreciated.
In addition to this performance, the
Sweet Adelines will be singing at the
Yachats Ladies Club on Friday, Dec. 13,
after the the service in the Little Log
Church at about 7 pm.
The Oregon Coast Sweet Adelines are
a part of an International organization
that includes education and performance
of music without instrumental

The Newport Youth Symphony on the Oregon
Coast will present its annual Winter concert on
Monday, Dec. 9, performing seasonal classics alongside
“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from “Mary Poppins.”
The concert will open with a rendition of “The Arrival
of the Queen of Sheba” from the opera “Solomon” by G. F.
Handel, performed by a small ensemble of students from
the youth symphony.
Other pieces to be performed include the tongue-
twisting “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” as well as
“Ashoken Farewell” and Mozart’s 27th Symphony.
Co-directors of the orchestra Barbara Wilcox and Kathy
Follett will preside. Mindy Simon leads the Family Strings
ensemble, which the symphony created to offer music
lessons to students at Sam Case Elementary School.
Monday’s concert will start at 7 pm at the Newport First
Presbyterian Church, 227 NE 12th Street.
The concert is free and open to the public, although
donations are welcome. For more information, contact

accompaniment. The Oregon Coast chorus
is under the direction of Paula Dahl.
Girls 14 and older and women are always
welcome to visit and sing with the group.
They will be meeting weekly beginning on
Thursday, Jan. 9, at the American Legion.
Participants do not have to read music in
order to sing in the group. Learning CDs
are provided.
The Little Log Church and Museum
in Yachats is hosting a pair of festive
performances this Friday and Saturday,
Dec. 6 and 7, to help fund the rebuilding
of this historical landmark.
On Friday, Dec. 6, Rhodd Caldwell
will perform a reading of
“A Child’s Christmas in
Wales” by Dylan Thomas.
Caldwell, a versatile actor
and singer, produced and
performed the reading
last year to a sold-out
audience in Newport in
Rhodd
collaboration with the
Caldwell
Newport Symphony
Orchestra. The reading
will be accompanied
with screen projections
of illustrations from the
book by Caldecott Medal
winner Trina Schart
Hyman.
Caldwell has had an

extensive association with
O’Connor
regional theaters for nearly
50 years as an actor, singer
and dancer, creating widely divergent roles
in theater, musical theater and opera. Some
favorites have included award-winning
turns as Salieri in “Amadeus” and Harold
in “The Boys in the Band,” Cogsworth in
“Beauty and the Beast,” Cervantes in “Man
of La Mancha,” Higgins in “My Fair Lady”
and Harold Hill in “The Music Man.” He
was featured as the Seal in a collaborative
premiere of “Zoopera: the Enchanted
Garden” from the Cleveland Opera and
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Caldwell’s reading will run from
7 to 8 pm at the Little Log Church
and Museum, located at {span
class=”LrzXr”}328 W 3rd St{/span}reet.
And on Saturday, Dec. 7, also from 7 to
8 pm, the church will host a performance
by classical guitarist Cameron O’Connor
of Eugene. O’Connor has gained
international recognition as a musician
and composer, and has been a prizewinner
in 10 international competitions. He now
serves on the faculty of Oregon State
University.
Admission to both events is $20 per
person, or $10 for kids aged 12 and under.
