lively Champions of change A trio of young climate change activists will be honored at the Celebration of Women Who Lead this Saturday, Oct. 12, in Newport. The celebration, organized by Central Oregon Coast NOW, will recognize the efforts of 15-year-old Kaydance Redwine, 14-year-old Maia Stout and 13-year- old Hailey Feuling, who took part in the student climate strike at their schools and at the children’s climate action at Hatfield Marine Science Center in September. The three were inspired by Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old who has taken the world by storm trying to get action on the worsening climate crisis. 4-H honors leaders “These girls are terrific,” said Cynthia Jacobi, coordinator of the NOW celebration. “The first time I met them was at Sen. Jeff Merkley’s town hall. They stood up and held his feet to the fire on climate inaction by our government. Our committee designated women who lead and inspire above and beyond expectations. We want to honor a wide spectrum of our community.” Other winners this year are: Delores Pigsley, chair of the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians; Franki Trujillo-Dalbey, immigration activist, KYAQ radio manager and Oregon Coast Community College professor; Sentila McKinley of Seashore Literacy Center; and Nancy Mittleman, founder of School of Artistic Movement and the Pacific Dance Ensemble. The public is invited and will have a chance to socialize, enjoy appetizers, wine, music and bid on silent auction items donated by local businesses and artisans. Silent auction items up for grabs include local art, jewelry, mini aquariums, sculpture, gift baskets and a fishing trip with County Commissioner Kaety Jacobson on her new boat. Proceeds will support Central Oregon Coast National Organization for Women Foundation’s promotion of women and girls. The musical headliner for the afternoon will be Saundra Perrin, loop diva of Newport, who uses vocals, guitar, keyboard and percussion to create soulful, ‘90s-style rock. The Celebration of Women Who Lead will run from 2 to 4 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street. Get a load of dis-guise Families, friends and supporters of 4-H are invited to celebrate those who have helped steer the program to success at an Annual 4-H Recognition Program this Sunday, Oct. 13, at Tillamook High School. Last year, the Tillamook County 4-H program reached more than 500 kids through traditional 4-H project clubs, school enrichment programs, afterschool programs and project day camps. The following awards will be presented: pins to leaders for length of service, teen and junior leader pins, first year member pins, county medals and certificates of achievement, outstanding 4-H alumni, outstanding leader awards and more. The 4-H program will also be recognizing several individuals, businesses and organizations for their support. Sunday’s program will begin at 1 pm in the cafeteria at Tillamook High School, {span class=”LrzXr”}2605 12th St{/ span}reet. The Tillamook County 4-H Association will provide chicken, rolls, ice cream and beverages. 4-H families are asked to bring a salad, side dish or hot dish. Running from 5 to 7 pm, the event will offer appetizers, beverages and live music, alongside the chance to admire masks created by more than two dozen artists. The Invitational Mask Show will be on display throughout October, available to view at 258 NW Coast Street in Nye Beach.
