beach reads Library booked for centennial celebration Newport Public Library is turning 100 and staff will kick off the centennial celebrations by throwing a huge party this Saturday, Sept. 14. The celebration will feature an unveiling of the new Teen Room mural at 11 am, followed by library tours at 11:30 am and 3 pm. Guests will be able to enjoy craft activities, a speakeasy, a photo booth and view items destined for a time capsule that will be placed inside the library wall for 20 years. Children are invited to bring along a small item to place in the capsule. The McEntee meeting room will be packed with booths from organizations including Oregon Coast Aquarium, OMSI’s Camp Grey, Lincoln County Historical Society, Oregon Coast STEM Hub, the Photography Club and more. Outside, guests can try their hand at lawn games and bubbles, get their faces painted, check out a vintage car and enjoy great eats from food trucks. A library geocache at 10 pm will offer the chance to scour the premises inside and out; and Americana Mayhem will be on-hand with hula hooping, storytelling and other entertainment from noon to 2 pm. There will also be a full slate of entertainment on offer at Literacy Park (see sidebar). Be sure to pick up your centennial celebration passport and have it stamped at each location. The centennial celebration, which is free and open to all, will run from 10 am to 6 pm at the Newport Public Library, 35 NW Nye Street. When more survivors arrive seeking sanctuary, tensions increase and this diverse group of strangers must negotiate a new way of living. Far in the future, an isolated community of descendants continue to farm this same estate. Among their most treasured possessions are a few books, including a copy of “Jane Eyre,” from which they have constructed their hierarchies, rituals and beliefs. When 15-year- old Agnes begins to record the events of her life, she has no idea what consequences will follow. Locked away for her transgressions, she escapes to the urban ruins and a kind of freedom, but must decide where her future lies. These two stories interweave, illuminating each other in unexpected ways and offering insights into loss, regeneration and wonder. Publishing workshop in Newport Author and publisher Suzanne Fyhrie Parrott will teach a free workshop on publishing this Sunday, Sept. 15, when she visits Newport as the guest of the Willamette Writers Coast Chapter. The workshop covers the basics of the book-publishing industry and offers resources to choose which publishing path best fits you and your work. “Now, more than at any other time in history, there are more opportunities and possibilities to write, share, and publish a story — and interact with an audience,” Parrott said, “Whether you are after the traditional publishing experience, complete with an agent, editor, and publisher, or want to self-publish your book, it’s completely within your grasp.” Parrott has an extensive background in graphic design and marketing. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1981, she launched OneWay Advertising and Design, working with such notable clients as Yellowstone National Park, Winston Fly Rod Company and Montana Power Company. In 2006, she established First Steps Publishing, an independent book publisher. Parrott is the author of bestselling books “The Ebook Formatting & Publishing Guide” and “The Lost Sigil Ebook Guide,” both of which reached #1 on Amazon.
