SEAVIEW — In the early 90s a peculiar gar-
den craze took root and raced across the U.S. It
was a popular trend that graced covers of promi-
nent lifestyle publications while appearing in Hol-
lywood movie scenes and countless homes across
the world.

What started with Nansen Malin, a small pig
statue and some metal wire at her kitchen table,
would eventually blossom into a wholesale busi-
ness that employed more than a dozen people dis-
tributing a variety of topiaries around the world.
Today, Malin, 67, operates a decidedly smaller
floral business from her Seaview home — still
offering topiaries — but catering to a different cli-
entele that largely involves local weddings and
events that call for whimsical floral creations from
succulent wreaths to flower crowns and unique
bouquets.
“I used to wholesale topiaries. I started at my
kitchen table and ended up in a warehouse with 14
employees. We would crank out everything from
succulent wreaths for Martha Stewart to Edward
Scissorhands,” Malin said while touring her home-
built Seaview greenhouse in April.
