The shortage iu the ea»t has not yet been felt because o f reserve stocks accumulated during the winter months when motor traffic is tied up a great deal longer than it is here. In meeting the situation the Stand ard Oil rnmpany has sought to curtail the use o f gasoline by pl--a»ure cars and at the same time provide as far as possible for commercial and agricul tural consumption. It has also found it imperative to maintain its reserve stocks, although these are now reduced to about four d a y s ’ consumption iu place o f the 40- or 80-day reserve which was held in storage a few y e a n ago. The company predict* that the pres ent shortage will la-come less acute as summer wears away, but advises strict economy in the u*e o f gasoline both for pleasure and commercial uses. New processes which extrart more gasoline from the crude oil are now being ixl- » tailed at th« company’s large refin eries at Richmond and El Megundo and these will increase the gasoline supply o f the future. * OREGON AGRICULTURE INSTRUCTORS TO MEET The second state conference o f Month- Hughes instructors in agriculture is to be held in Hood River the last o f August, according to word receivi-d by E. J. Edwards, who will have charge o f the agricultural work iu the Cottage Grove schools this year. The program will be arranged by the state supervisor in agriculture and will be o f as practical nature as possible. One aim in introducing the agricul ture departments in the schools o f the state is to keep in as close touch as possible with the needs o f each com uinnity and so fa r ns possible have the work win its way into the heart o f the community. The state board, through the correspondence which it keeps up with each instructor, en courages this aim and keeps each in structor informed o f the work o f other high school departments o f agriculture along this line. The instructors are employed on a full year contract but provision is made for time o f f for study and vacation at seasons wheu they can best be spared from their work. CITY IS OVER TOP IN STATE CHAMBER DRIVE With several tentative pledges yet to be completed it can safely be suul that Cottage Grove has invested the quota naked from it in the state eham ber o f commerce drive for funds for a comprehensive three year promotion campaign. The completion o f the quota was delayed by the fact that memls-rs of the soliciting committees have been so tied down by their personal affairs that they have not been able to take the time to complete the drive. The quota for this city was over $000. Any amount raised over and aliove the quota will be turned into the local commercial club for promotion work ELECTRIC COMPANY AFTER THOSE WHO DESTROY ITS LIGHTS The Cottage Grove Electric company reports the malicious and wilful de struction of n large number of its street lights.
