dead. He waa 81 years old and had

600,000 bushels. In average yield per

practice of law in Oregon who took

That airplane patrols for the pro­
tection of Oregon forests from fire is
virtually assured is Indicated by an
exchange of telegrams between Gov­
ernor Olcott and Colonel H. H. Arnold,
of San Francisco, commander of the
air service for the western division.

Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roose­

Seymour Jones, speaker of the house
of representatives at the lost session
of the state legislature, issued a pub­
lic statement in which be said he was
strongly in favor of a special session
of the legislature to ratify the woman’s
suffrage amendment to the constitu­
tion, and would use his best efforts
to that end.
Children made orphans by the acci­
dental death of their fathers who elect­
ed to take advantage of the workmen's
compensation act are entitled to com­
pensation until they reach the age of
18 years, according to a legal opinion
rendered by Attorney-General Brown
at the request of the state Industrial
accident commission.
Colonel John L. May of Portland,
Lieutenant Paul B. Wallace of Salem
and Captain Ben S. Fisher of Marsh­
field will be appointed members of an
armory board to have full charge un­
der thn general staff of the national
quard oV the maintenance of all ar­
mories throughout the state, according
to an announcement made by Governor
Olcott.
Adjutant General Conrad Stafrin
itates that authorization had been re­
ceived from the war department for
the organization of the following units
if national guard: One regiment of
infantry, one battalion (four compan­
ies) coast artillery, one battery heavy
field artillery, one squadron cavalry,
one company of engineers and one am­
bulance company.
The official record of every Oregon
soldier serving in the world war is be­
ing compiled in the state library at
dalem under the direction of State
Librarian Cornelia Marvin, who was
authorised to make the compilation
by the recent legislature. FVom these
records will be made the distribution
if service medals, scheduled for No­
vember 11 next.
Since the straw balloting started at
the general army recruiting offices in
Portland, 1200 ex service men have
voted. The total vote to date stands
is follows: National prohibition, for
332, against 610; universal military
lervlce, for T60, against 252; league of
nations, for 775, against 244; woman
iuffragc , for 669. againat 347; dispo­
sition of the kaiser and hla aide«, death
penalty 458, exile 366, freedom 65; the
American-French girl, the American
girl boat 528, the French girl beat 91,
