Newspaper Page Text■ ■ ■ “Meats in Storage” Every working day o f the year 75,000,000 pounds o f meat are required to supply home and export needs—and only 10 per cent o f this is exported. These facts must be kept in mind when considering the U. S. Bureau o f Markets report that on June 1, 1919, there were 1,348,000,000 pounds o f meats in cold storage. If the meat in storage was placed on the market it would only be 20 days’ supply. This meat is not artificially withheld from trade channels to maintain or advance prices. Meats in storage consist of— 65 per cent (approximate) hams, bacon, etc., in process of curing. It takes 30 to 90 days in pickle or salt to complete the process. 10 per cent is frozen pork that is to be cured later in the year. 6 per cent is lard. This is only four-fifths of a pound per capita, and much of it will have to go to supply European needs. per cent is frozen beef and lamb, part of which is owned ,by the Government and was intended chiefly for over-seas ship ment. Bennett, also o f Portland, have gone into the Hohemta district on n fishing trip. New Hog Disease Found. A disease o f hogs that is new to this section o f the country hits been found by l»r. Hoy Hmith, a veterin arian o f Eugene. The disease is known as snuffles, or bull nose, anil effects young pigs. In all his years o f practice here this is the first case of this disease he has found, says l>r. Hmith. but the disease is common in other sections. Tho first symptoms ate a swelling around the nose and if the mouth is examined one or more sores or ulcers will generally be found. As soon as a cose o f this disease is observed the pigs that ure affected should be isolated because the disease is ettsily transmitted.
