The Hend Athletic club Is organiz ing as a subsidiary unit the Hend Rod and Gun club, with the purpose of bettering fish and game conditions In central Oregon. A shipment of cranberries was made from the marshes In Clatsop county to Portland Friday. This is the latest shipment o f this fruit ever made from the district. Growers feel that the very fact o f their being able to place berries In the markets at this time fully demonstrate the excellent keep ing quality of the cranberry raised in this section. The total crop for the past season was over 3000 barrels of cranberries. This amount for the 100 acres set out to vines Ln Clatsop coun ty, gives an average of 30 barrels per acre. A decided Impetus was given to the programme for military training In the high schools of Oregon when Superin tendent o f Public Instruction Churchill announced that the war department, through Colonel Howard at Spokane, has offered to furnish all needed uni forms and equipment to all high schools which w ill enlist 100 students In m ilitary organizations. Colonel Howard further promised to furnish an army officer as Instructor for each high school of the state and wherever possible, an assistant will be provided for the Instructor. W ith no power spraying apparatus available, owners of fruit and orna mental trees on Hood River city lots are unable to comply with Instructions of County Fruit Inspector Frank Stan ton, who says that the state horticul tural laws require that all city trees affected by diseases that menace or chard property must be sprayed. Mr. Stanton w ill present the predicament to the county court at its regular ses sion In April and it Is likely that tha city council will be asked to co-operats in securing effective machinery for spraying city orchards. Oovernor Olcott Is entitled to serve tha full four years of the unexpirad term of the late Governor Withy- oombe. He likewise has authority to resign as secretary of state and ap point his successor to that office with out jeopardizing his right to remain as governor of Oregon. Those are the salient features of a sweeping opinion handed down b y Attorney-General Brown. The opinion was given at the request of Governor Olcott, who, short ly after he took office as governor, announced hit desire to relinquish the office of secretary of state and name a succeasor if the laws of Oregon would permit of such a procedure.
