Church of Nazarene Reports
Past Year Is Outstanding
Church of the Nazarene. a re­
latively small denomination, had
one of the most outstanding years
in its 54 year history in 1962 ac­
cording to Dr. S T Ludwig Kan­
sas City, Mo., general church sec­
retary.
And the local Church of the
Nazarene at 152 South M St , has
also made good gains this year

The congregation finished and
moved into its new church build­
ing early in the year and a dedi­
cation service was held in Octo­
ber with a large crowd from Cot­
tage Grove and surrounding area
in attendance.
The church has shown good in­
creases in both membership and
Sunday school, according to the
Rev. Mr. Conner, and the Sunday
school won an attendance banner
the last four months. The banner
is given to the church with the
largest increase in Sunday school
attendance in competition with
Sunday schools of comparable
size in Western Oregon.
The world mission program of
the denomination opened work in
Chile and Bermuda, and the first
Nazarene church in the Republic
of Panama was organized accoid -
ing to a report by the Information
Service The Nuzarenes now have
work in 43 countries the report
states.
Also abroad the Nuzarenes or­
ganized a new church district in
West Germany with five congre­
gations and dedicated a sanctu­
ary in Frankfurt and a church in
Copenhagen. Denmark. Also op­
ened. the report continues, was a
church at Nazareth, Israel, the
first Protestant church to he
built in Israel since the nation
was reestablished in 1948 and a
new church at Brasilia the first
Protestant church to he dedicated
in the new inland capital of Bra­
zil The denomination's
radio
program carries a Spanish lang­
uage broadcast and an English
program.
The annual statistical report by
Dr. Ludwig showed a 2.49 per­
cent gain in domestic member­
ship; a net gain of 28 new chur­
ches; a denominational record
set in per capita giving; a record
total for giving for all purposes
and gains in the Sunday school.

Two Elders Resign at Local
Church After Long Service

Mr. Hands became a member
of First Christian church when in
his teens at Albion, 111., and plac­
ed his membership in the origi­
n a l church (Christian church)
when he moved here in 1915.
Before becoming an elder, he
served as deacon. He was also
Bible school superintendent for
25 years, church clerk for 15
years and taught the intermediate
boys’ class for 16 years, and for
the past five years he has taught
the men s class. Mr. Hands has
served as chairman of the elders
for several years. He was chair­
man of ihe building committee
for the present church, following
the burning to the ground of the
original church on Mother’s Day
1947, and donated much labor on
the present church building. Se­
veral members of the church
were baptized by Mr. Hands.
Wheeler became a member of
Pleasant Hill church at the age
of 12 and has been active in sev­
eral churches since, serving as
an elder for 46 years, 21 of which
were in the local church, and
has been song leader whereever
he was a member. He assisted
in the construction of the Trent
church, became a member and
elder there in 1916, was also
song leader and teacher of the
high school class. He served in
the same capacity of eider for
four years in the Creswell church
before moving to Cottage Grove
where he continued his eldership,
song leader and taught the men’s
class.
In hdlfilling their duties as eld­
ers, both men participated in the
ordination ceremonies for sever­
al young men of the church who
had graduated from Bible college
and prepared themselves for the
ministry, took part in the dedica­
tion service for the
present
church, donated labor on the
church building, counseling where
needed, took communion on Sun­
