limit of the pest.
Though the pest is easy to con­
trol. d ep artm en t officials urge all
holly grow ers to w atch for it.
Many homes have o rn am en tal
plantings w hich will he disfigured
for decorative uses if th e leaf
m iner should he present but is
not recognized and controlled. The
pest is of econom ic im portance to
O regon's com m ercial holly indus­
try, now grown on about
1500
acres and w o rth an n u ally as high
as a m illion dollars.
Up to now, the leaf m iner has
not been found in com m ercial
plantings in O regon; if it should
he com m ercial o p erato rs, like
home ow ners, will have th e a d ­
v an tag e of co n tro l m easures a l­
ready estab lish ed in o th e r sta te s
w here th e leaf m in er has been
found. T he im |x ,rtan t th in g right
now is for ow ners of holly trees
to help the s ta te d eterm in e the
limit of sp read of this pest.
