The Lions battled the injury-rid dled Bulldogs on fairly even terms during the first half and early in the third quarter, but a consistent North Bend squad began to pull away and were never threatened thereafter. Grove ‘B’ Squad Nips Sweet Home In Overtime Tilt Cottage Grove High's "B" squad nudged Sweet Home 47-45 Tues day night in an overtime tilt at CG, despite the attempt by I-eon Hayes to make it a close game by rolling the ball to the Huskies in the fading seconds of the con- CG and Sweet Home fought to a 11-11 deadlock in the first frame. The Huskies, however, began to pull away and nabbed a 27-20 first half lead, followed by a 36-26 third quarter margin. Then Hayes Inc. began to func tion CG put on a scoring spurt and before the bewildered Huskies knew what happening, the Lions pulled up to within four points of Home 38-34. Church League Basketball Play Opens Thursday rhi marked the first night of intra-church basketball league play with eight teams com peting. In the opener, the First Baptist Church team, coached by Scott Ryan, defeated the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 39 to 11. Pat Murphy acts as coach for the L.DS squad. High scorers for the Baptists were Jake Thomas, 12 points, John Wilson. 12 points and Charles Broughton, 11 points. Terrance Thompson and Charles Shirley each scored tour points tor the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The Presbyterian club, coached by Ed Maloney, outscored the Methodist team 24-14. Jack Car ter and John Thom each scored eight points for the winners. Wayne Tonole was high man for Buzz Wyant's Methodist team with seven counters. Despite 15 points scored by Lar ry Roberts, the Church of God defeated the Lutheran five by a score of 39-32. Jim Barkman was high man for the winners with 14 points, followed by Larry Her mann with 11. Behind Roberts in scoring for the Lutheran team, was Jack Mullen, with 10 points. Homer Gates is handling the team representing the Church of God and Jim Hyer the Lutheran squad. In the last game, Larry Davis, with eight points, led his team in defeating the Church of Christ, coached by Jerry Witherspoon. Bill Case was high for the losers with six points. The game ended with the Free Methodists on the long end of a 20-14 score. Gerald Beers is coaching the Free Meth odist team. Arnold Gates, Bob Gerstenberger. John Maloney and Buzz Wyant officiated. Tonight in the second series of games, the Presbyterian club meets the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 7:30 in the High School Gym. Also at 7:30, the Lutheran team takes on the Free Methodist. At 8:30, the Methodists will be attempting to upset the Baptists, while the Church of Christ plays the Church of God. Sweet Home Dumps CG 33-45 Tuesday Sweet Home continued its jynx over Cottage Grove Tuesday night when the Huskies dumped CG for the second time this year 33-45 on the Lion court. The closest Cottage Grove came to winning was in the third period when Doug Ballew sunk one of his many long ones to put the Lions five points I'ehmd Sweet Home 22-27.
