Ore gon State college forestry special ist. ROSS, who heads the OSC fire prevention campaign, reminds all home owners th a t this week, Oc tober 3 to 9, is N ational Eire Pre vention Week and the tim e to check fo r m ajor causes of fires in Oregon. "The house holder can’t remove a ll fire risks,” Ross says, “ but he can and should take steps to correct those fire threats that strike Oregon, homes and farm s repeatedly.” T h irty -tw o pep cent o f Oregon's 11,303 home fires last year, as re ported by ^he Oregon fire marshal, were caused by careless smoking and matches. N<*xt were over heated or defective heating plants and flues that accounted fo r 22 per cent of home fires. Oils and hot grease in the kitchen caused 15 per cent. O ther m ajor causes of , home fires were 10 per cent by hot m et als. sparks from frictio n and com bustion, and explosions; eight per cent from hot ashes and open fires; and seven per cent from e le ctricity and defective w iring. The six groups accounted fo r 94 per cent of Oregon home fires. As, an accident k ille r, fire in. the United States and Canada is top ped only by fatal m otor vehicle injuries and, by falls.
