'. ''w sometimes faster than America’s sawmills can replace it. When this shortage continues, prices go up. When building activity goes down, the supply builds up—and prices go down. Prices go up and down just like a teeter-totter. They respond month in and month out depending upon supply and demand. This is because there are 53,000 sawmills in America; most of them producing 2x4s and other such standard items. This tremendous output is sold competitively to some 6,000 wholesalers, who in turn, sell to about 26,000 retail lumber dealers. We must also keep in mind that there are thousands of producers and distributors of building materials which can be substituted for lumber. Thus you can see th at the building materials industry is a highly competitive one. If a producer is to succeed in this field he must deliver proper volume of products in the required qualities, at competitive prices—and give his customers good service. It is in these ways th at we try to win and keep customers—thereby keeping our mills in continuous operation. Did you know that the Oregon Legislature has been Republican for 74 straight years? No party should be in a position of monopoly power that long. The two-party system is vital to de mocracy.
