New York • Chicago • Detroit • Philadelphia Hazardous Sixth Street Crossing If we were asked to name the worst traffic hazard in the Cottage Grove area, we would place the Sixth street crossing of the Southern Pacific railroad first. Not only is it a traffic hazard, but a fire hazard as well. So far as we know the Southern Pacific has done little or nothing to relieve this hazard except erect a warning bell. . . Patience of many motorists is often tried, waiting for the SP engineer to switch a long line of freight cars. This time consuming wait could be done away with if the SP could be persuaded to build a switch yard north of the Main street crossing or else cease to try to switch a mile of box cars at one time. On May 9th, a stalled car of a Standard oil employee was wrecked by a freight barreling through town, while the train crew was apparently reading orders without any effort to slow up or give warning of the approaching freight. And previous to this a rural fire truck was halted briefly while waiting for the track to be cleared by a switching freight. It so happened that the wait was brief, but there have been instances where rural property might have burned up while the truck waited for a long fieight to clear the crossing. SP officials have informed us to make a complaint any time the crossing was blocked for 15 minutes, but in 15 minutes time valuable property can be lost. Besides, who among the waiting motorists would think to look at a watch to time the switching train? From observation it seems to be quite an effort for the SP to inaugurate any local improvements. Could the fact that the SP is the only carrier in the district without competition aave anything to do with the local situation or is this road just naturally tight ? DEFINITIONS (E. B. Gallaher) A CONSERVATIVE is one who thinks of the welfare of his family and his country first ; who is willing and anxious to stand on his own two feet; earn his own living; save what he can; one who wants to spend his own savings; live under the American Constitution and the Bill of Rights; develop himself and his country' according to the American system of free-incentive enterprise. A “LIBERAL" is a Socialist, one who is determined to be liberal in the spending of someone else’s money, not his own. He believes in handouts to the have-nots who won’t support themselves: he is an internationalist and, as a do- gooder, demands that America support the underprivileged of the world. He is determined that the American taxpayer support the bankrupt governments of Europe, arm them and and defend them with American troops at our expense. At home, he is for free medical care, government control of schools, control of industry, higher pay for less work. The “Liberal" is convinced that he is heaven-ordained to run the world and demands that billions of our tax money be handed over to him to spend as he pleases without the necessity of accounting for it. As a “Liberal” hates to spend his own money, he always gets himself in position to spend public funds or other people's money, for which he always arranges for ample compensation for himself. He is for gov ernment control of the nation and its industries, the support of the people from the cradle to the grave. In other words, he is a Socialist, no matter what flag he sails under at the moment. Group of political scientists has rated the first 10 U. S. senators. The first three are Douglas of Illinois. Kefauver of Tennessee, and Morse of Oregon, in that order.
