Stark tragedy struck a group of loggers Sunday, May 20, taking the lives of three members of the logging community operated by the Hiebert brothers. The Jogging camp is about 10 miles across the from Urangle. The men were changing shifts and ’’Windy” Hiebert, Dan Hie- bert <two of four brothers), Clar ence Anderson, and Willis Hansen entered a speed boat to return to camp and bring men back for the next xhift. Approximately 100 yards out from shore their boat struck a rip tide caused by throng tide run ning against swift current of the Stikine River, capsizing the boat and throwing all the men into the icy waters. They all had on heavy logging clothes but were able to cling to the boat for a time. Hansen, the only good swimmer, managed to take off his heavy i clothing and get to shore, which . he reached in an exhausted con-1 I dition with bleeding feet from walking on sharp rocks for one or two miles, and in a state of shock. I The other men had disappeared i when searchers reached the scene * of the tragedy. Communications were finally j established with Petersburg, about 30 miles away, and a doctor flew । over at once. No trace of the three bodies has j been found. Dan Hiebert was for merly a resident of Cottage Grove and lived in the vicinity of the • Seventh Day Adventist Church j school on North River Road.
