Johnny Trunnell went down to the North Umpqua last weekend and got his limit using a spinning outfit and worms. Ben Hilliker re- ports that they’re biting nicely on flies in the Row river. In te bay, salmon are going for plugs and pilchers. Winnipee lake is also producing fine catches, with reports of trout from 8 to 10 inches in length. Here’s the roundup of conditions in the state: Coastal Section Trout fishing is improving in the north coastal streams. Some Jack salmon are now being taken. Bay fishing has slumped but blue backs are being taken off shore. Favorable catches have been re ported in the North Fork and the Main Fork of the Nehalem river. Salmon angling should pick up in the next few weeks On the central coast, trout an- gling is generally slow. A few salmon are being taken at the Umpqua river bar. Perch and bluegill fishing is excellent in the central coastal lakes. Striped bass fishing remains fair in lower Coos Bay on troll and casting. Some bass are being caught on kelp worms along the banks and in boats. Southern Oregon Catches of trout in the main Rogue river are good to excellent. The water is falling and clear, ■ Good catches have been made on gray hackle and bucktail coach- man. Single eggs are producing good catches in the Prospect- ■ Union creek area. In the Upper Umpqua, water conditions and trout fishing are excellent. Va rious wet flies are producing well. Willamette Valley Water conditions are excellent throughout the McKenzie area. Fishing on the McKenzie has im- proved and Blue River and South Fork are producing a number of good catches. Trout in the Upper Willamette are being taken on spinners, eggs, worms, and flies— bucktail caddis. March brown and beetle bug patterns are best. Good catches of Mackinaw and Dolly Varden are reported from Odell lake. Gold lake was closed July 10. and the fact that if an antelope I season is held, it would fall in 1 August. Tentative plans call for a limited season, August 19 to August 25. both dates inclusive. Those wishing to hunt antelope should secure applications at license agencies, complete them and mail them to the Game Com mission office in Portland as soon as possible. No money should be sent with the application. Census information shows modest increase in antelope num- tiers and the possibility of a limit ed season on bucks only appears to tie good.
