cure for malaria. Ju st why seeds have not been planted we do
not know hut other experim ents in planting quinine seeds have
been very ineffective. Even in Jav a, where most of the quinine
now comes from, it took many years and lots of scientific ex­
perim entation before • quinine” trees that were w orthw hile be­
came a reality. E fforts have been made to grow quinine from
seed in various central American countries as well as in the
Philippines with only m oderate success. It took the Dutch 40
years before this experiment showed any signs of successful
fruition. Quinine hark, in order to l»e commercially valuable,
must contain six per cent, or more, of quinine sulphate. Most of
