VOLUME XLV1II. (fotlaac (Broue Sentinel (Established June 15. 1««9.) Pacific Produce Has Opened a Receiving Station R. R. Station Secretary of the National Asso ciation of Tobacco Distributor«, made the remark while In Port- land hut w«*ck that tobacco chew ing Is becoming a lost art. The old masters may live on in Western motion picture thrillers. Other wise they would be forgotten, with something of benefit to this old world. They never produced anything that was uplifting or had esthetic appeal. A bill before congress would shorten the inch by two parts in a million. A similar attack upon the national debt Is expected to follow immediately. • • • In his effort to dispel a possible belief that he is ambitious to be come a dictator, the president gives three reasons why he is op- posed to dictatorship, which M designates as a, b nnd c. Evidently he couldn't use figures, because they have ail gone Into fliruring the national debt, and he 0MÜdn*1 use capital letters because the alphabetical organizations have completely depleted the supply. It was time, anyway, that we had the elementary abe's of the thing. • • • Culprit in New York, who had twen fined for passing a red light, when asked his occupation, said. "I am nn auto Instructor and I teach folks how to drive.” He evi dently has some correspondence pupils In Portland. • • • dmrles Jones, movie cowhoy, says kids are the same t<»dny as when grandpa was a boy. If we may use current juvenile English, what a guy grandpa must have been! • • • The birth rate of those on re lief is nearly double that of non- rebef families It seems consistent that the gimmes and begetters should be found tn the same homes • • • Anyway no Roosevelt has yet accepted a Hollywood contract. Must be that the idea of offering one hasn't occurred to the movie directors. • • • Every newspaper in the first congressional district has pulled some kind of a pun on the candi dacies of Mott and Nott for cong ress. If we could change pronun ciation for the nonce, we might observe that some of the wise cracks approached, but were not quite hon mots. • • • The democrats must have had their eyes opened when they noted the number of persons who arc willing to admit being republicans in order to file for office. Along the Fairways The golf course has become one of Cottage Grove’s beauty spots. It is hard to keep ones eye on the ball when playing in the rough between the first and fifth fair ways, there is such an array of color! Violets, buttercups, wild strawberry blossoms grow in abundance, with a few other wild flowers scattered here and there among them. It Is a beautiful sight! As An Experiment If Reeults Justify The Establishment Of a Branch May Result Ax a result of a meeting held at tin- Cottage Grove hotel March 29, the object of which wax to de termine whether it would be profi table to establish a branch of the Pacific Cooperative Poultry Pro ducers Corporation in Cottage Grove for the buying of eggx and selling of poultry feed, that com- pany has opened a produce receiv ing station at the Southern Pa cific dejxjt, which will be open on Monday and Thursday afternoons. A. W Eppenbaugh of Creswell has been appointed manager of the station. It is understood that this is only an experiment for the present and that if the egg and poultry pro ducers within the Cottage Grove trading area take advantage of the opportunity to sell here instead of Eugen«-. the present station will be converted into a branch for the buying of eggs and selling poultry feeds. The egg producers who attended the meeting at the hotel March 29 had generally been marketing Un u eggs in Eugene and buying a portion of their poultry feed there, manifested great interest in having a branch established here so that they would be able to both sell and buy here, which they rightly maintained at that time would be much better for them and at the same time result in great good to Cottage Grove as at least a portion of the $50,000 earn ed here and spent elsewhere each month would remain here. The local team scored a 74 Sunday out of a possible 75, with three wins and one tie, by virtue ¡of Ed Heck and Kelly Cooper’s 25. and Harry Rentle and Jeff Ensley’s 24. Cooper went on to set the record of the day with 50 straight, while Ensley broke 97 out of 100, to place him among the men to beat in the state. Heck broke 71 out of 75 at the 16- yard post, and 46 out of 56 on the 20, 24 and greater distances. Other local men breaking in the twenties Sunday were: Alton Woodard 23, Pete Nelson 22, W Hileman 23. P. M. Beach 20. cnas. Hall 23, Vic Chambers 22, M. Har- pole 22, Richard Smith 20. Shoot ing for the Dexter club F. Kim ball broke 22 and Clive Taylor 20. Few teams in the state have made as great a progress in the past year as the local shooters, and with similar improvement during the cming year the local club should be able to develop a five-man team that will rate with any team in the state. Mrs. Clifford Smith brought one to The Sentinel office the day- after Easter Sunday, believe it or not. The hen which laid it must have had some way of knowing that it was Easter and that it was up to her to do something out of the ordinary. That radish with claws, which allegedly grew on Route F, Eu gene, is certainly not in a class I with our egg with a tail and the egg shaped like a dumbell, the kind you can use for your morn ing exercise, not those who eat radishes with claws, if there be such in Oregon.
