AGRICULTURAL CONFERENCE IS IN SESSION IN EUGENE Object Is to Translate Into Action Conclusions of Recent State Wide Conference. Tho agricultural, busi ness nuii civic, organizations of the county cooperated in arranging tho conference and program. Thu main object of the conference is to adopt a county agricultural program based on the stato program and adapted to Lane county condi tions. It is to bo arranged on a commodity basis. Chairmen of the various commodity groups have been named ns follows: E. J. Word, Eu gene, dairying; Oscar Dunlap, Junc tion City, poultry; Ralph Laird, Creswell, farm crops; Cal M. Young, Eugene, livestock; George A. Dorris, Eugene, horticulture; C. D. Borer, Eugene, industrial; Mrs. F. B. Har low, Eugene, home economics. These groups will work out de tailed reports on production and marketing to be presented tornor row for consideration of the general conference. The HentineL Following closely upon the recent taxpayers’ meeting in which Com missioners Sharp and Roney were unmercifully flayed, cornea the an nouncement that an attempt is to bo made to invoke tho recall against tho commissioners. The charges which will bo made are such that there is no doubt that the move ment will have support from thou- sands who aro constitutionally op posed to the recall idea. Many here themselves during have expressed _ _ the past few months to tho effect that under ordinary circumstances they aro opposed to tho recall but that were it invoked against Sharp they would certainly support it. As Commissioner Roney is now recog nized as pliable putty in the hands of Sharp, it is presumed that the move against him will have the same support as tho move against Sharp. Responsibility for the invoking of tho recall rests with Colonel W. G. D. Mercer, one of those who took a prominent part in castigating tho commissioners during the progress of tho recent taxpayers’ meeting. The fact that at that time Colonel Mercer naked Commissioner Sharp to deny sonic of tho talk current on tho streets of Eugene regnrding his personally conducted transfer of the woman bootlegger from tho county jail to tho county poor farm would indicato that ho hits something up his sleeve that is likely to enliven the recall movement. Colonel W. G. D. Mercer issued a statement for publication to the of feet that after an investigation cov ering u period of more than 30 days ho has found enough against, tho two officials to justify tho culling of an election to oust them before their terms expire. Sharp’s term ends December 31 of this year and Roney’s two year» later. Colonel Mercer in his statement charges “outrageous discrimination against Lane county merchants ’ ’ and that tho commissioners wrecked tho excellent road building orgnniza tion that had been established a number of years prior to tho time they obtained control of tho court and adds that ho has accumulated a great mass of additional informa tion from the county records that can bo used against the two offi oittls. Commissioner Sharp, when up prised of the movement to effect his recall and asked if ho desired to make u statement, replied that ho had nothing to say at tho present time. Commissioner Roney was in Portland, having been called there on account of the serious illness of u friend of the family. If rumors aro true, an attempt has been made to obtain informa- tion against the two commissioners, especially Sharp, of a different na ture than that which Colonel Mercer says ho has gathered. It was pretty generally rumored Monday that a professional detoctivo from a na tionally known agency has been keeping tab on Sharp’s movement» and utterances for somo time. Just who has hired tho detoctivo or ehat kind of information is desired has not been divulged. While it is be lioved that no organization or sot of individuals have as yet taken up the recall, Colonel Mercer’s nil nouncoment probably will set the ball to rolling nud it promises to bo a merry old fight if the petitions aro circulated and an election is called. Colonel Morcer declares that ho has tho backing of the farmers ’ union and grange and that candi dates to run against Sharp and Ro noy aro being considered. Chickens Have Narrow Escape Four hundred chickens narrowly escaped a sudden death Friday at tho 8. L. Tarr place when a tree fell onto tho chicken house. Tho tree, which was cut down by Mr. Tarr’s grandson, Forrest Miller, was leaning away from tho chicken house but in some way swung around and fell directly onto the house, wrecking it for a distance of about 60 feet. Ono chicken sus tained minor injuries nnd all the others escaped.
