CharleB Burkholder Jr. accompa nied them from here to assist Mr. Hemenway with the driving, as the latter was not feeling well. Word has been received from Mr. Burk holder that tho party drove 225 miles tho first day, stopping at Eu reka, Calif. He said the roads wore not so good after leaving Oregon but they had boon promised hotter roads at Redding. Mr. Burkholder will stop at Santa Anna to visit Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Selbredo, relatives of the Burkholders. Worth Harvey motored to Salem Bunday to bring home Mrs. Harvey, who had been visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. Ernest Wyatt. Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Wyatt, parents of Mr. Wyatt, accompanied Mr. Harvey on the trip. Dwight King, who recently sold his grocery business in Eugene, is again temporarily at his old posi tion in the Powell & Burkholder store while W. A. Ward is on his vacation. O. E. Nichols returned Saturday from the Coos bay country, where ho had been engaged in engineering work during tho summer season. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Turk, former residents of this city, have pur phased a home in Eugene at 1043 Jackson street and have moved there. Mr. Turk is an employe of tho Booth-Kelly Lumber company. Colonel John Leader, former ca det commandant of tho University of Oregon, well known to many hero, is ill at Vancouver, B. CL says word received by friends of the colonel. The illness is the result of wounds received while in France as colonel of the royal Irish rifles. Although confined to his bed tho colonel is still optimistic and states that he is planning to come to Eu gene with Mrs. Leader and thoir youngest son Derek to attend the annual home coming celebration in November. Mrs. H. E. Carter left last Friday for Grants Pass to visit during tho week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Seybola. Arthur 8. Mrs. Sam Newcomb has received word from her eon, Glen Vick, who was with the destroyer fleet out from Ban Diego when n number of the boats went onto the reefs. He was a witness of the catastrophe but was on one of the boats that did not hit the rocks. The woman are sisters of Mrs. Groat. Mr. and Mrs. J. Hardy Crow at tended the annual pioneers ’ reunion, whieh was held Wednesday at the fair grounds at Eugene. Mr. Crow proudly wears the 1852 badge, hav ing crossed the plains in that year at the age of seven. Louin Weise was injured Wednes day at the Weise brothers' saw mill. He waa hit in the back with a cable but it is thought his injuries are not serious. William Taylor sustained serious injuries to his right hand Wednes day at the Chambers mill.
