THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2019 THE CHRONICLE — 9 OFFBEAT OREGON HISTORY LOCAL HISTORY 25 YEARS AGO < 50 YEARS AGO < Vandals ‘bomb’ passing cars Trick or Treat Nov 2, 1994 – Creslane Elementary School’s annual Halloween Carnival drew a crowd of dressed-up partici- pants last Saturday evening. The carnival is a fundaiser to help pay for swimming lessons for elementary students next year. DON PILCHER/THE CHRONICLE ARCHIVES • OCT. 30, 1969 — Oregon State Police said Monday they would increase patrol and vigi- lance in the wake of a series of pumpkin “bombings” carried out from overpasses that cross Interstate 5 in this area. An OSP spokesman said the first reported incident of a pumpkin dropped on a pass- ing car was reported Oct. 22 shortly before midnight. A citi- zens band radio report notified police that a series of pumpkins had been dropped on passing vehicles from the Dale Kuni Road, Market Road and Turnell Road overpasses. The incident continued through the weekend, the police spokesman said, adding that one of them shattered the windshield of a semi-trailer rig. The driver was unhurt and proceeded after the incident. < Arsenal man earns his stripes - gets promoted to Specialist NOV. 6, 1969 – Larry K. Massey was recently promoted to Specialist 5. Pinning on the promotion stripes for Sp/5 Massey is Captain John B. Farley and his First Sergeant, Robert E. Burns. Sp/5 Massey is attached to Headquarters Company at the Arsenal. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Massey, live on Butte Road. PHOTO FROM THE CHRONICLE ARCHIVES 35 YEARS AGO < New deputy begins Creswell duty OCT. 10, 1984 – A new deputy began working out of the Lane County Sheriff’s Office in Creswell Friday. Ken Hull, 31, replaced Tom Miller, who resigned to accept a position with Burns International Security. Miller, a 17-year veteran of law enforcement and a Creswell deputy for six years, said that the job offer from Burns “was a bigger carrot than I could turn down.” With the private firm, Miller said, he will have job security, weekends off, a better salary and the luxury of working the day shift. Hull has been with the sheriff’s department since 1978, most recently on the boat patrol and at the county jail. A Eugene resident, Hull and his wife, Cynthia, have an 18-month-old daughter, Jennifer. Ken Hull Bulldog netters headed for state OCT. 31, 1984 – Junior Roni Dersham gives class- mate Renee Hahn a pat of encouragement during last Thursday’s volleyball triumph over Pleasant Hill.
