4 — THE CHRONICLE David Boyd Nystrom May 28, 1942 - Oct. 11, 2019 David Boyd Nystrom, 77, of Cottage Grove, Oregon, passed away on Oct. 11, 2019 of multi- ple myeloma cancer. David was born on May 28, 1942 in Eugene, Oregon, to parents Wilbur N. Nystrom and Virginia (Syphers) Nystrom. He attended school in Cottage Grove, Oregon, and was a member of the National Guard before being honor- ably discharged in November of 1966. David married Georganne (Tudi) Sigler in 1984. They later divorced. He and Sue Miller were married on July 12, 2009. Logging was his passion, starting as a choker setter before advancing to become a rigging slinger and cutter, as well as an expert saw fi ler. He moved to California in 1965 where he worked as a mill- wright, and then on to Alaska where he built his fi rst sawmill at the age of 33. David attended Lane Community College in 1991 and received an Associate of Science degree in machine technology as well as certifi - cates for diesel engines, engine overhaul, fuel systems, heavy equipment and applied fl uids. After a decline in the timber industry, he started his own business, 2-D Logging and Excavation. He was a hard worker who enjoyed construc- tion as well as logging, regu- larly using skidders, cats and dump trucks as he developed lots in the south hills of Eugene and helped to build Middlefi eld Golf Course. David was certified to possess, use and transport explosives for demolition. He was an avid hunter and fi sher- man, always looking forward to salmon fishing on the Umpqua River for fall chinook with his wife, Sue. David also loved to go out for breakfast on Sunday mornings, regularly traveling up to 100 miles to try new restaurants. In his younger years, David was a Cub Scout Leader. He made sure to impart prac- tical life lessons, especially to children he knew needed extra help. He was a member of the Cottage Grove Elks for 26 years. David is survived by his wife, Sue Nystrom of Cottage Grove; daughter Paula Laswell of Bend, Oregon; son, David N. Nystrom of Eugene, Oregon; stepsiblings Ron McHugill of Cottage Grove and Kelli Thompson of Creswell, Oregon; cousin Delores Rayson; three grand- children: Natalie, Christopher and Sophia; and good friend Bill Parsons. At David’s request, there will be no service. The family requests that donations be made to South Lane County Fire & Rescue. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2019 OBITUARIES OPINION James Edward Deacon March 5, 1925 - Oct. 15, 2019 James “Jim” Deacon peacefully passed away on Oct. 15, 2019. He was 94 years old. Jim was born March 5, 1925 to Edna and E dwa r d D e a c o n i n Berkeley, California. He moved with his family to Oahu, Hawaii in 1935 and was raised on a sugar plantation. He was a senior in high school when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. He was shipped to the main- land to live with family in California and grad- uated from Clearlake High School in 1942. He joined the Navy after graduation and attended Doane College in Nebraska. Jim was a pa r t of t he Nav y Pre-Flight P rogra m, but sustained an injury and spent eight months in the Naval Hospital. He wa s honorably discharged in 1944. He resumed his education at UC Berkeley and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1950. Jim returned to Hawaii and studied agriculture. He was hired by Castle & Cooke (C&H Sugar) as a management trainee and worked there for five years. In 1955, he returned to UC Berkeley, where he ea r ned his degree in mechanical engineering in 1957. A f t e r g r a d u a t i o n, he moved to Stockton, California, where he met Doris Mose while play- ing bridge and attend- ing the same church. On April 24, 1959, he married Doris, the love of his life, and became t he proud Daddy to Bill (6) and Susan (4). They moved to the San Francisco area in 1960, where Jim completed his engineering studies and received his licenses in mechanical, civil, and structural engineering in four states: California, Oregon, Washington and Montana, and worked for several engineer- ing firms. In 1963, their son, James, was born and their family was complete. T he fa m ily moved to Redding, California in 1968 and Jim began his ca reer with U. S. Plywood. From Redding, they moved to Roseburg, then back to Redding, and finally to Eugene, Oregon, in 1976. Jim retired from Champion Building Products (formerly U.S. Plywood), where he was head of engineering, in 1987. Jim came out of retirement and worked for Teledyne Wah Chang in Albany, Oregon, for another seven years. For many years, Doris and Jim enjoyed traveling in their RV across the US and Canada and went on 12 different cruises. They were avid bridge players, both in couples groups and individual groups, like the Grumpy Old Men’s Group. Jim was very active in the church and served as a trustee. Jim enjoyed tennis, crabbing and camping with family. Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris; sons Bill (Helen) and Jim (Sirena); daughter Susan (Cal); five grandchildren: Lisa, Pet er, Mat t hew, Melanie and Susie; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition, Jim and Doris informally adopted two grandchildren, Chris and Leigh, who are cousins of their grandchildren. Jim was a kind gentle- man with a strong faith in Christ. He had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He was a true friend to many, a loving husband, father, grandfa- ther and great-grandfather. His family is blessed and thankful for their many wonderful years together. A memorial service will be held at at 2 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Wesley Methodist Church in Eugene. Phyllis Jean Emang May 21, 1927 - Oct.11, 2019 Frances Holmes Nov. 23, 1935 – Oct. 5, 2019 Frances Barbara Holmes passed away Oct. 5, 2019 after a brief illness. She was born in Scobey, MT Nov. 23, 1935 to Joseph J. Longacre and Barbara M Murr. They moved to Springfi eld in 1946. She attended St. Francis High School and graduated in 1953. She attended busi- ness college and worked as a secretary. At the age of 52, she returned to school at Lane Community College and obtained her LPN license and worked briefl y as a nurse. She married Joseph P. Holmes from Cedar Rapids, IA on Jan. 11, 1957 and they lived there briefly until returning to Springfield in 1960. They raised four children, Elizabeth (David) Ayer of Cottage Grove, Leonard (Patty) of Prineville, Patrick of Springfi eld and Barbara of Springfi eld. She was a member of St. Alice Catholic Church since 1946. She took an active interest in politics and other social issues. She enjoyed sewing, music, history and travel. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and her brother, Leonard Longacre. She is survived by her children, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services will be held at St. Alice Catholic Church 1520 E St. Springfi eld on Oct. 25. Rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. and the Funeral Mass will be at 11:00.A reception will be held at the parish hall afterwards. She was born on May 21, 1927 in Arco, Idaho, to parents John S. and E dit h A. (Joh nson) Brassfi eld. She graduated from Bakersfield High School in California. Phyl l is ma r r ie d Leonard H. Emang on May 8, 1965 in Corvallis. She was a secretary in the Special Education depa r t ment for t he Albany School District. She also drove a grain truck in the fi elds while living in Shedd, Oregon. Phyllis enjoyed playing cards, playing chess on the computer, traveling with her husband, riding dirt bikes in the desert, prospecting for gold, crocheting and snowbird- ing in the winter months. She was a member of t he Sevent h- day Adventist Church. Phyllis is survived by daughter a nd son-in-law, Edith E. and Robert Fetsch, of Dorena, Oregon; son, Paul Stewart Owen, of Pittsburgh, California; son and daughter-in- law, Leonard Allen and Phyllis Jean Emang, of Corvallis; son and daugh- ter-in-law, John Thomas and Ruth Emang, of Orem, Utah; 12 grand- children, 19 great-grand- children, two great-great grandchildren and one on the way. Arrangements in the care of Smith Lund Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove. Samuel H. Cole 1931-2019 Samuel H. Cole was born in Flint, Mich. in 1931 and was adopted as an infant. The family m o v e d t o Sa nt a Monica, California, and Sam graduated from Santa Monica High School. Shortly thereafter, Sam joined the Marines. He was sent to Korea and was engaged in the battle at the Chosin Reservoir. After his honorable discharge, he enrolled in UCLA and graduated with a business degree. Sam worked for Hughes Aircraft, Northrup- Grumman, the United States Postal Service and fi nally retired after manag- ing a sporting goods store in Eugene. Sam met Lyn LaGrander in August 1985 and they were married on Dec. 28, 1985 at the Church of the Resurrection in Eugene. After retirement, Sam and Lyn enjoyed RVing, driving across Canada, snowbirding in Needles, California and Green Valley, Arizona. They also traveled to Kauai, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the Cook Islands. Sam leaves behind his wife, Lyn; his stepdaugh- ters Gail LaGrander (Jerry Johnson) of Tempe, A r i zona, a nd A my LaGrander; grandchildren Reid and Lauren Smith, of Springfield; and the best dog, Ellie. A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Creswell Presbyertian Church. A reception will follow.
