26 — THE CHRONICLE EDUCATION ANGLER’S LOG COMMUNITY Essay contest for high, middle schoolers THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2019 Creslane Elementary School Students of the Month Deadline is Oct. 31 FROM STAFF REPORTS CRESWELL – The Creswell VFW & Auxiliary Post No. 4039 is holding its annual essay contest in which students can win scholarships and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C., along with an adult. The Voice of Democracy competition was established in 1947 and is the VFW’s leading scholarship program. It’s a chance for high school students, grades 9 to 12, to put their patriotic pledges to print and presentation, as they compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, "What Makes America Great?”. The national winner receives a $30,000 scholarship. The Patriot’s Pen Essay is for middle school students, grades 6 to 8, who are given the opportunity to express their opinion on a patriotic theme and improve their writing skills under the theme of “What Makes America Great?”. The deadline for submissions is Oct.31. For entry forms and more information, call 541-255-5105. JOIN THE CONVERSATION Creswell School District Community Forum CRESWELL – Creswell School District Community Forum will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 6-7 p.m. at the District Offi ce Conference Room located at Creslane Elementary School. Creswell Middle School Students of the Month VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH Doug Allison has been instrumental as a volunteer, and in bringing in other volunteers, for Creslane Elementary School’s Intergenerational Reading Collaboration (IRC) since its inception; the program is now in its seventh year reading with students in classrooms. As pastor at Creswell Church of Christ, Allison contacted the school district seeking volunteer opportunities just as Laurie Swanson- Gribskov was starting a pilot IRC program at Creslane, and Allison continues as a volunteer and enthusiastic advocate of the program. Creswell Christian Academy Students of the Month Creswell High School Jenessa Mallory has started her senior year off with a bang! As ASB president, Principal Adam Watkins says she is a great student leader, taking hold of the leadership mantle and offering suggestions to help the school provide engag- ing activities for students. She also excels in the class- room: Calculus teacher Scott Worsham says she’s consistently “on it” in class and excelled on the fi rst quiz and test. “We appreciate her work ethic and attention to detail as a leader and as a student/athlete,” Watkins said.
