A 45-mile drive from CHS to Oakland's stadium. What2Watch: Oakland will try to establish its running game early, making up for its lack in size with speed and aggression. Despite a high number of returning starters and ability to run, the Oakers haven’t had to rely on QB Conrad Jones – who has a decent arm – throwing the ball. Oakland’s defensive front has also struggled this year, poten- tially giving Creswell’s offense time to beat the sixth-ranked Oakers. Who2Watch: Oakland returns the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in Wil Powell and on offense will try to get the ball to junior RB Corbin Picknell, who has 1,424 yards this season, whenever possible. The Bulldogs also had four athletes – Dallton Dewey, Logan Johnson, Reece Germen and Chance Leach – return last week from injuries, boosting play on both sides of the ball and contributing to their victory over Central Linn. Notable: Last year Creswell lost 18-12 when the Oakers came to town. Oakland ended the 2018 season 2-7 and Creswell finished 1-8. With both programs growing, it should be a good gauge on where they are in the rebuilding process. Quotable: “Corbin Picknell is pretty good – a lot like Zach Young for Monroe; he accounts for about 90% of their offense, so we’ve got to stop him, for sure,” said coach Scott Worsham. “But if we play a solid game, as good as we played against Central Linn, we can hopefully put ourselves in position to make it a competitive ballgame.” GINI DAVIS/THE CHRONICLE Sarah Lanz dives underneath a La Pine hit. No. 2 Creswell faces No. 1 Santiam Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Bourne will encounter Creswell’s First Team All-League outside hitter Breanna Dapron, who had 16 kills in the teams’ last meeting. Notable: It's No.1 Santiam Christian and No. 2 Creswell on Tuesday and Creswell is looking for revenge on the road. Tuesday is Senior Night for Santiam Christian, giving them extra motivation. Quotable: “Santiam Christian went four sets with Cascade Christian and five sets with Salem Academy; they hadn’t lost a set at all going into those games, but now they’ve lost some, so hopefully we can capitalize on that,” said coach Anna Baltrusch. “Cascade Christian’s decent, Pleasant Hill’s playing really good, and then we play Harrisburg again on Senior Night, so we’ve got four really good games to finish out the regular season.” Quotable: “Our league’s been all over the place this year, with every- body losing to teams they shouldn’t lose to and beating teams they’re not expected to beat,” said coach Brandi Wittenborn. “Our backs are against the wall, but if we continue to play like we have been, with finally having everybody back and healthy, we could potentially at least work our way into third place and get a league playoff game.” GIRLS’ SOCCER Games CHS at Santiam Christian, Thursday, Oct. 17, 6 p.m. THS vs. Churchill, 5:30 p.m. CHS vs. Pleasant Hill, Tuesday, Oct. 22, 4:30 p.m. CHS Coed Soccer (JV) What2Watch: Creswell was shut out by Santiam Christian 2-0 and lost to Pleasant Hill 4-1 earlier this season. With only five games remaining, will the rebuilding Lady Dawgs be able to get all the pieces to click against the third-ranked Eagles and ninth-ranked Billies? Saturday, Oct. 19 CHS vs. S. Eugene (6A) JV2, noon BOYS’ SOCCER GIRLS’ SOCCER Tuesday, Oct. 22 CGHS at Junction City, 7 p.m. SHS at North Eugene, 6 p.m. THS at Churchill, 5:30 p.m. CROSS COUNTRY Saturday, Oct. 19 CGHS at Warner Pacific XC Classic, Lent Park, OR SHS at Warner Pacific XC Classic, Lent Park, OR Wednesday, Oct. 23 CGHS at Country Fair Classic, Rich- ardson Park, OR THS at Country Fair Classic, Richard- son Park, OR Key: 3A Creswell High School (CHS) Bulldogs (JV only), 4A Cottage Grove High School (CGHS) Lions, 5A Springfield High School (SHS) Millers, 5A Thurston High School (THS) Colts. – Compiled by Jordan Lampe VOLLEYBALL Matches CHS vs. Pleasant Hill, Thursday, Oct. 17, 6 p.m. CHS at Cascade Christian, Saturday, Oct. 19, 1:30 p.m. CHS at Santiam Christian, Tuesday, Oct. 22, 6 p.m. What2Watch: After playing Pleas- ant Hill, the Lady Dawgs will take on the two teams that competed in the 2018 state championship game only three days apart as they move closer to postseason. CHS will play a nonleague game against Cascade Christian on Saturday, keeping the Bulldogs in a competitive frame of mind for top-ranked Santiam Chris- tian. The Eagles swept CHS on their home court on Oct. 2, 20-25, 18-25, 19-25. In the first set, Creswell led 7-2 and 16-10 before falling to the Eagles 20-25. Who2Watch: Second Team All- League setter Jenessa Mallory against Cascade Christian’s First Team All-State Taylor Cave will make Saturday’s match a battle for both teams. On Tuesday, Santiam Christian’s All-State hitter Emily Games CHS vs. Santiam Christian, Thurs- day, Oct. 17, 4:30 p.m. CHS at East Linn Christian Acad- emy, Tuesday, Oct. 22, 4:30 p.m. What2Watch: Special District 3 is not a particularly strong league this season, but Creswell beat the league’s highest-ranked team, Santiam Christian, 4-2 in its first meeting this season, so the Bull- dogs will seek to prove themselves with a repeat win over the defending league champion Eagles. Who2Watch: For Creswell, quick, accurate passes, offensive attacks and aggressive defense by Grant Marshall, Cam Nguyen, Dawson Sharkey, Trevor Harrold, Rogelio Legorreta and others, will be key. GK Jayden Pratt has also been played well for the Bulldogs. Notable: The Bulldogs haven’t fielded a complete, healthy set of starters for much of the season, with players out with illnesses, injuries and other issues, but expect to hit their stride this week with the team back at full strength. What2Watch: This will be the Bull- dogs’ final race before the Special District 4 Championships on Oct. 29 at Lane Community College. Who2Watch: Finishing only 7.56 seconds apart in the 5,000m race last weekend, teammates Brandon Moehlmann and Josiah Lee both ran personal record times at the Celtic Invite. Notable: Country Fair Classic organizers are working to establish the traditional Country Fairgrounds in Veneta as the venue for this longstanding annual favorite. In the meantime, the race is being run at Richardson Park at Fern Ridge Reservoir, over a course that is flat, fast and varies from shoreline to woods to open fields. Quotable: “We are looking great with ‘districts’ right around the corner,” said coach Jonathan Ferguson. “We have only one more tune-up meet, at the County Fair Classic, which is always a good meet for us.” – Compiled by Gini Davis and Jordan Lampe ALESHA CULP/SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Brandon Moehlmann (left) and Josiah Lee run together mid-race at Saturday’s Celtic Invite. The two Bulldogs fi nished the race in third and fourth place, respectively. Who2Watch: SC star returner Audrey Miller and P-Hill star returner Alicia DuChateau will be challenging for the Bulldogs, so Cre- swell’s defense, led by Brielle Brick and Riley Lamm, will be key. Notable: The Lady Dawgs have struggled to score this season; in nine games, they’ve scored one goal in five of them and shut out in three. Of course, the scores don’t tell the whole story ... Quotable: “Based on how we played last time against Santiam Christian and this week against Pleasant Hill, I’m actually looking forward to these games,” said coach Dan Smathers. “I have high expectations that we’re going to play very well and be competitive.” CROSS COUNTRY Meet: CHS at the Country Fair Classic, Richardson Park, Eugene, Wednesday, Oct. 23, 4:30 p.m. GINI DAVIS/THE CHRONICLE Evan Stephens slides in front of La Pine’s José Orozco, intercepting an attempted pass last week. The Bulldogs face the defending state champs this week, Santian Christian.
