In Other Words April 7 2022 Legion Briefing By Damian Cox Welcome to Spring! This is the time of year where most of us start to transition from primarily indoor ac- tivities to a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. Please be aware of your sur- roundings as more and more people arrive in Vernonia to enjoy tourist activities like walking around town, playing at the park, riding bicycles, and espe- cially keep an eye out for motorcyclists. American Legion National Commander Paul E. Dillard has set an ambitious goal of $450,000 for the Third Annual 100 Miles for Hope event. Proceeds go directly to The American Legion Veterans & Children Foundation (V&CF) and will be used to support disabled veterans and military families. I would like to humbly encourage ev- eryone to support Post 119 and myself at https://app.mo- bilecause.com/vf/100MFH/DamienCox as we participate in this worthwhile event which runs through Labor Day. My personal goals are 500 miles (combined walking/jog- ging/bicycling/motorcycling) and I am hoping to raise over $500 in donations. We are blessed and thankful to have received a very generous donation from Ziply Fiber. Through the ef- forts of Scott Anderson, Ole Gonzales, the installers, and the entire Ziply Fiber Team, we now have gigabit fiber internet and a phone line at our building. These tools will enable us to better assist American Legion Members, veterans, and the community. On April 8 through April 10 Knit Wits will be host- ing a Garage Shuffle Sale at our building. There will be sev- eral vendors there including Scouts BSA Troop 201 selling chocolate bars and Tillamook meat sticks for $1 each. April 9 we observe National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day which was signed into law by Pres- ident Ronald Reagan on April 8, 1987 to honor captured wartime service members who were able to eventually re- 13 turn home. Both the Air Force Reserve (April 14) and the Army Reserve (April 23) celebrate birthdays this month. I invite all veterans to join me for breakfast at Mariolino’s Restaurant in Vernonia on April 30 at 7 am. If the weather is nice our American Legion Riders Chapter will go for a ride afterwards. The route will be determined during our next American Legion Riders meeting on April 16, at noon, at the Post 119 building. On May 14 we will be hosting another Murder Mystery Dinner. It will be the same theme as the previous event so if you have already attended, please do not spoil the surprises. Tickets are available for purchase on Bingo Nights or by contacting us. American Legion Vernonia Post 119 is located at 627 Adams Avenue, Vernonia. Our regular member meet- ings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 7 pm. American Legion Riders meet on the third Saturday of each month at noon. SAFE of Columbia County is back at the Vernonia Health Center (1005 Cougar St., Vernonia, Oregon 97064). As our county’s go-to agency for those expe- riencing domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, SAFE has made itself a home at the Center on the first Friday of every month, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Feel free to go by, say hello, ask questions, and/or pick up some informative materials. Prior to COVID, SAFE came to the Health Center weekly. Currently, the schedule is monthly, but it can increase if the need exists. “We are here and we’re confiden- tial. There’s a reason we chose the name,” says Janelle Adams (janellea@safeofco- lumbiacounty.org), as she refers to the or- ganization’s easily remembered name… “SAFE, of Columbia County”. Janelle is the friendly SAFE advocate who you’re most likely to meet. She has years of ex- perience, and provides outreach throughout the County. SAFE offers one-on-one support, responds to law enforcement and health system requests, assists with restraining or- ders, court advocacy, provides training and prevention programs, support groups, safe shelter, and in general, works to be a posi- tive force in the community. As a confidential victim services program, SAFE advocates are not manda- tory reporters. SAFE works with both male and female survivors of abuse, believing everyone deserves a life free from violence. SAFE also provides services for teens and works with all county school districts.
