City News October 21 2021 Vernonia City News... At the October 18, 2021 City Council Meeting: Citizen of the Month – Coun- cilor Donald Normand nomi- nated, and the Council recog- nized, Shawn Gibson for her work to help organize the an- nual Salmon Festival and her involvement in the creation of the Intercultural Society of Ver- nonia. Council Removes Territory From City Limits – After holding a third Public Hearing at which there was no public testimony, Council voted to adopted Resolution 933, com- pleting the process to remove a small piece of property from the city limits at the request of the property owner. Council Discusses Process for Filling Vacancy – Council was presented with a staff report reviewing the past process the Council used to fill a vacancy for an open seat on the Council, in which they had four appli- cants and the Council appointed Donald Normand. The Council now has another open seat fol- lowing the passing of Council- or Grant Williams on Septem- ber 5, and the three other pre- vious applicants who were not chosen, Susan Wagner, Cherise Ash, and Charles Kibben, have said they are still interested in the seat. Mayor Rick Hobart opened the discussion saying he had one other citizen who expressed interest. Council agreed to open the position to the public for new applicants and to recruit a Citizen Panel to interview all applicants, along with the Council, for the posi- tion, and will hold interviews on December 4, meaning the seat will have been vacant for over three months. Mayor Appoints Cal- houn to Planning Com- mission – Based on a recommendation from the Planning Commission and with approval from the majority of the Council, Mayor Rick Hobart ap- pointed Steve Calhoun to the Planning Commission; Councilor J.R. Allen ab- stained. The Vernonia Transfer Station is scheduled to be open on the nd 2 and 4 th Saturday January - October October 23 Smoke Testing Results – The Council heard a re- port from staff member Ben Fousek on the results from the smoke testing conducted on the City sewer system. The Public Works Department will repair issues that are the City’s responsibility and repair is- sues with numerous manhole covers, and landowners where issues occurred will be noti- fied and required to make the repairs; reimbursements for repairs on private land may be available to property owners.
