In the Northwest League Playoffs Verno- nia defeated Faith Bible 55-54 in an exciting and dramatic contest on February 20. The game was hard fought and physical. After Jayden Hartman and Jordan Walters fouled out of the game in the fourth quarter, sophomore Brooklynn Walters took over. With the Lady Loggers down by 2 with less than a minute to play, senior Abby Coleman stole an inbounds pass and Walters made her shot to tie the game. The Loggers defense held, and with just 2 seconds left Walters was fouled while driving to the hoop. She missed the first free throw, but hit the sec- ond to win the game for Vernonia and send them into the League Championship game against rival Portland Christian at home on February 23. The Lady Loggers defeated Portland Christian 54-36. After falling behind early in the first quarter, Vernonia battled back to take a lead they never relin- quished, playing some of their best basketball of the season. Vernonia led by 7 at the half, and by 10 at the end of the 3 rd quarter, but the final result was not assured until just 2 minutes were left. Brooklynn Walters led the Lady Loggers with 19 points, including 4 3-point baskets, junior Hartman scored 11, and seniors Jordan Walters and Lauren Ely both added 10 points to a well rounded Logger offense. Abby Coleman again had a strong defensive game, as did Hartman. Following the game Hartman was named League Defensive Player of the Year and received 3 rd Team All League honors, Brooklynn and Jordan Walters were both named 1 st Team All League, and Ely was named 2 nd Team. The game was tied 16-16 at the half, and both teams played a fast paced second half. In overtime, foul trouble hurt Vernonia and Coquille’s size and strong inside game proved to be the difference. Brooklynn Walters again led the Lady Loggers with 23 points, Hartman had 10 and Jordan Walters scored 7. Wrestling – Five Vernonia wrestlers competed at the State Tournament on February 28-29.
