6 community august1 2019 Seniors Announce Plans for Scout Cabin Work party planned for August 10 Vernonia Senior Citizens and Friends of the Scout Cabin are nearing completion of the transfer of ownership and management of the Cabin in Vernonia, formerly known as the Scout Cabin, to the seniors. Representatives of both groups met in July to plan the transition which will be effective in August. The Cab- in in Vernonia website has the new contact telephone number listed, and a few other changes to the site are forthcoming. The rate structure for rentals will remain the same. Vernonia Senior Citizens will continue to op- erate the Cabin as a rental facility but use it for their own weekday activities. On Friday, July 26, Vernonia City Adminis- trator Josette Mitchell met with Five Star Builders in Banks to sign the contract for the construction of the long-awaited Senior Center and Food Bank building adjacent to the Vernonia Health Clinic. A schedule for the project will be published in August. The Vernonia Cares Food Bank will move from the American Legion Hall to the new building, and services for residents 60 and older will be offered on the Senior Center side. Vernonia Seniors anticipate serving two to three con- gregate meals per week in the new location and will prepare home-delivered meals at this location. Both organizations expect savings in utility costs due to modern building codes, improved insulation, shared utility meters and shared walk-in freezer and refrigeration units. The Cabin in Vernonia will host Senior Center activities for all ages which are precluded in the new building for five years per the Voices From the Mill Pond is Still Seeking Submissions!
