Anderson On June 29, 2019 Dave Ander- son of Birkenfeld lost his battle with cancer and went home to his Savior, Je- sus Christ. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family and his faithful dog, Jelly. He was joined in marriage to the love of his life, Cleone Marie Hecker on April 22, 1967 in Portland, where they made their home until 1976, when the family moved to Vernonia. Their small farm was a source of joy for the entire family, especially their children David, Dawn, and Brian. In 1984 they moved to Oklahoma City for two years when Dave was recruited for a job. They returned to Vernonia in 1986 and have resided since. David L. Anderson, 77, was born December 29, 1941, in McCall, Idaho to John W. Anderson and Sonia P. Ander- son. They resided in Vancouver, Wash- ington, moving to the Grants Pass area when Dave was four. He attended school in Grants Pass, graduating in 1960. He had two great passions: art and music. He began playing drums at the age of three and continued through- out his life, playing professionally at the age of 12 and leading his own band at 15. He became a traveling musician when he joined the Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based Tommy Strange and the Features. This blues band toured constantly, primarily in the southwest, including Las Vegas. Dave was able to mix music and college, attending Shasta College in Redding, California, Southern Oregon University, Portland State University, Museum Art School, and Advertising Art School. He began his 20-plus years in re- tail advertising management, beginning as advertising manager for Hudson Stores, Payless Drug Stores (now Rite Aid) and TG & Y Stores of Oklahoma City. He fin- ished his retail career as senior creative director at Fred Meyer before launching Anderson McConaughy Graphic Design. After eight years in graphic design, he evolved into fine art, where he enjoyed some success. When asked recently, he said there are three projects that he was extremely proud of: • Anderson McConaughy concepted, de- signed, and installed “The Living Glass,” a 120-foot glass wall at Legacy Emanuel Hospital. A year long project, it features cutting-edge computer technology cou- pled with type, graphics, calligraphy, and images. The wall is a background for glass prisms bearing the names of donors and was featured in a national graphic arts magazine. • Dave was commissioned to do an origi- nal artist book as a wedding gift to Ma- sako Owanda and Crown Prince of Japan, Naruhito. It featured hand-made paper, calligraphy, and a custom-cast glass case. • He believed his Holocaust art collection was some of his very best, the pinnacle being a 10-book suite featuring children’s art and poetry recovered after the Holo- caust. Done as a gift to Min Zidell, they were later donated to Pacific University in Forest Grove as part of their permanent display. He then expanded the Holocaust theme, completing 25 pieces of collage work. Dave was preceded in death by his wife Cleone who passed away on March 28, 2017, just 25 days before their 50 th wedding anniversary. Also preceding him were his parents John W. and Sonia P. Anderson; brothers Chuck, Bruce, and Bob Anderson, and his sister Dolly An- derson. He is survived by his son David Anderson of Vernonia, daughter Dawn Grenier of Astoria, and his son Brian An- derson and his partner Lindsay Richards of Forest Grove. He is also survived by the grand- children that he loved: Stacia Knurek and Rocky Jones of Beaverton, Melora Gre- nier of Astoria, Jason and Jeremy Hecker of Astoria, Jonathan Anderson of Verno- nia, Kahli Anderson and Brian Hundley of Kapolei, Hawaii, Oliver and Tatem Lee Anderson of Hillsboro, and Brayden Richards of Forest Grove; plus, numerous loving nieces and nephews, and loving friends. A celebration of life will be held at 12:00 pm on July 20 at the Natal Grange in Vernonia. TOO BUSY?
