10 schools february7 2019 VHS Winter Sports Report Wrestling – The Loggers took 5 th place at the Oregon Classic on January 17 - 20. The Classic is a duel meet competi- tion and head coach Chris Barnes said this was the first time Vernonia has won their bracket. Vernonia won their first Marie Krahn Massage Therapy four matches, defeating Coquille 48-18, North Lake 48-23, Central Linn 42-18, and Jefferson 57-12. Standout wres- tlers for the Loggers included Byron Cook who won all four of his matches at 132 pounds, three by fall; Austin Si- card at 138, who won three of four matches all by fall; and Josh Rice who won four matches, three by fall. In the Championship Bracket the Loggers defeated Lakeview 47-30 in the quarterfinals, before falling to Culver 65-6 in the semifinals, and then losing to Reedsport 60-6 in the 3 rd place match. Against Culver, Thompson was the lone winner, and Sicard received a forfeit win in the Reedsport match. On February 1-2 Vernonia’s girl wrestlers made history, competing in the first official Girls North Division OSAA State Qualifying Tournament. Hailey Reynolds finished 3 rd at 130 pounds, winning four of her five matches, before losing her wrestle-back match against the 1 st place finisher. Charity Coleman took 6 th place at 120 pounds, winning four of seven matches, three by fall. On February 1, Vernonia hosted a five-way tournament with teams from Kennedy, Sheridan, Santiam, and Si- letz Valley. The format worked well, with continuous action on two mats, with many wrestlers getting as many as three matches during the evening. Matt Lavoie, Patrick Fletcher, Josh Sholes, Luke Thompson, Cody West, Cook, Si- card, and Rice, all won matches. Sopho- more Pete Crystal bounced back from being pinned to win his sec- ond match by fall in one of the more exciting contests of the night. The Loggers will take part in a League meet, a warm up for the District Meet, at Neah-Kah-Nie on February 8-9 and then head to the Districts to defend their title from last year on February 15-16. The State Tournament will be held at Memo- rial Coliseum on February 22-23. Girls Basketball – The Lady Loggers remain in 2 nd place in the Northwest League, but have a chance to grab first place with their final league game of the season against 1 st place Portland Chris- tian on February 7. Following their 56-16 win against an overmatched Gaston squad on February 5, the Vernonia girls had 13-2 record in league play, and a 14-7 record overall. Following the Lady Loggers’ 41-21 demolition of 1 st place Portland Christian on February 15, the girls had a let down and lost 48-37 to City Christian on January 17. Since then Vernonia has reeled off six straight wins, including a 54-50 revenge win over Faith Bible, who handed the girls their only other continued on page 15 Vernonia School Board Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month. The next School Board Meeting is scheduled for February 14 at 6:00 pm in the Schools Library.
