16 schools december20 2018 VHS Winter Sports Report Wrestling – The Vernonia Logger wrestlers are off to a great start this season, with several team members bringing home individual wins at several tournaments. At the Warrenton Invitational Vernonia finished a strong 3 rd in team scoring against a tough regional lineup. Patrick Fetcher took 2 nd place and Brandon DePue finished 4 th at 106 pounds. Wyatt Jones won the 126 pound bracket with three falls, defeating team- mate Luke Thompson in the final. Josh Sholes won the 132 bracket, also with three falls. Austin Sicard battled back to take 4 th at 145, recording three falls after a loss in the opening round. Josh Rice won the 152 bracket Patrick Fletcher with four straight pins while Isaiah Thompson went 3-1 on the way to a 4 th place finish at 152. James Wat- son finished 2 nd at 170, winning three straight matches by fall, before losing in the final. On December 14 the Loggers finished 3 rd at the Yamhill/Carlton Dual Meet Tournament. At the Hagerty Invitational on December 15 the Loggers finished 2 nd out of 14 teams, just 2 points behind winner Scio. Transfer student Matt Lavoi won the 120 pound bracket and Wyatt Jones took first at 126. Josh Sholes went 2-2 to finish 4 th at 123 and By- ron Cook took 3 rd at 138 winning two matches by major decision. Austin Sicard won the 145 bracket with three straight pins. Josh Rice took 2 nd at 152 and Heppner Forster finished 3 rd at 170. For the Vernonia girl wrestlers, Charity Coleman took 2 nd place at the Liberty School Tournament on December 15. The Loggers will com- pete in the Clatskanie Tourna- ment over the holiday break on December 29, and then travel to the Pac Rim Tournament in Sea- side on January 11-12. Girls Basketball – The Lady Loggers suffered their first loss in Northwest League play, falling to a determined Faith Bible squad 49-46 on December 17. The Lady Loggers are currently 3-1 in league play and 4-4 overall, with league wins over City Christian 53-27, Knappa 45- 22, and Neah-Kah-Nie 38-19. Senior point guard Joyce Everett has been the leader on the floor, guiding the Lady Logger offense. Junior Jordan Walters is the focus of the offense along with freshman Brooklyn Walters, who has easily stepped into a starting role on the team. Junior Lauren Ely has developed into a strong presence under the basket, while junior Jessica Butcher and sophomore Jayden Hartman have contributed strong minutes and solid play. The Lady Loggers are scheduled to participate in the St. Paul Tournament over the holiday on December 27-28. They will play at home against Columbia Christian on January 8. Boys Basketball – The Loggers grabbed their first win in Northwest League play on December 17, de- feating Faith Bible 46-35 behind the strong play of Jake Handegard who scored 15 points and grabbed 15 re- bounds. The Loggers now have a 1-3 record after falling to City Christian 78-66, Knappa 88-66, and Neah- Kah-Nie 51-48. The Loggers have a 4-5 record overall on the season after getting non league wins over Colton and Warrenton. The Loggers are led by ju- nior point guard Kale Sullivan, se- nior Handegard and junior Gunner Harral, with senior Abram Martin and junior Jackson Fletcher round- ing out the starting lineup. The Loggers will travel to the St. Paul Tournament where they will play over the holiday break on December 27-28, and will return to league play with a match up against Columbia Christian on January 8. Junior Jordan Walters was named to the Second Team All State as an Outside Hitter/Middle Block- er, while senior setter Joyce Everett received Honorable Mention on the All State Team.
