Fifteen years ago that became a reality and I have always felt it was the best decision I could have made. From day one smiles and greetings from strangers that would soon become fast friends. I had come here to “retire” and build a second career. Three years ago when my niece moved to live with me, she too was wel- comed and supported. Her experiences here will give her a strong foundation for the rest of her life. So when this summer we got the call that she was to receive the gift of life in a new and perfect heart, from a family we did not know, I was not surprised by what happened next. I was not surprised when someone/s stepped forward and said, “I’ll make sure Bridgette gets walked every day.” I was not surprised when someone/s said, “I’ll stay at your home so your pets are not alone.” I was not surprised when someone/s said, “I’ll mow your lawn and take care of your gardens.” I was not surprised when someone/s organized a fundraiser to cover expenses throughout my niece’s recovery. I am humbled, I am grateful, I am at a loss at how to let you all know how very glad I am that I made that choice fifteen years ago to be sur- rounded by this extended family in this little town in the woods. From the pleasant woman at the front desk, to the medical assistant who took my vitals, to PA Richard Ham- blin who attended me, everyone was friendly, welcoming and efficient. I was in and out within a couple of hours with hardly any waiting; most of the time used was my necessary enrollment pa- perwork. It was a huge relief to not have to drive over the hill late in the day, and it was a good opportunity to check out their services. Thanks to you all, Ver- nonia Health Center and Adventist Rural Health! Tobie Finzel Vernonia High School Essay Contest High School seniors in Verno- nia are invited to compete in an essay contest based on the question: “Why is it Important to Learn About the His- tory of the Japanese Internment during World War II?” Prizes will be awarded to First, Second, and Third place win- ners. There will be an opportunity to learn about the Japa- nese Internment at an exhibit at Ver- nonia High School Library during the week of October 22-26. The exhibit is free and open to the public. She was hand raised in a foster home so we know she does great with kids, dogs, and other cats. If you are looking to add a little spice to your home then this is your girl. If you are interested in meeting this girl please call or email. Duce is a neutered male pit bull mix. He is brindle with some white and weighs about 80 lbs. He is playful, smart, and a very sweet boy. We feel that he will do best in a home where he gets to be the only kid so he can have all the attention. He tries to stay clean in his kennel, and he would probably do best with someone who doesn't leave him alone too much. His leash manners are impeccable and is a favorite among our dog walkers. He knows a variety of commands including sit and down. His enrichment package has been sponsored so he also comes home with a great amount of stuff.
