6 community july5 2018 Vernonia Ultramarathoner Finishes 3 rd in Division Brian McKernan celebrat- ed St. Patty’s day in an unusual way. He joined 51 runners in the Pacific Rim One Day Run in Longview, Washington. The goal of this race is to run as many miles as you can in a 24 hour period. Held at Lake Sacajawea Park, a certified 1 mile loop around the lake makes count- ing the miles easy. McKer- nan finished at 50 miles, nearly twice the distance of any previous race he competed in. He completed his tenth marathon in 2017 then turned 60 in January. Naturally, his next personal goal would be an ultramarathon! This means any race longer than 26.2 miles but they are common- ly in distances from 50 km (31.1 miles) up to 100 miles. It is also a common format to run as many miles as possible in a set time pe- riod. Some intrepid competitors ran over 100 miles with the overall winner, 34 year old William Betts of Chicago run- ning an incredible 114 miles. While the rest of us were en- joying our corned beef and cabbage, these folks were accomplishing new personal bests and driving themselves more than ever before. Congratulations Brian on this great personal ac- complishment! The Rose City Motorcycle Club once again showed up to help the people of Vernonia, arriving on Saturday, June 16 with 606 pounds of food which they donated to the Vernonia Cares Food Bank.
