14 schools june7 2018 Sullivan Wins Two Events at State Meet Vernonia boys finish 8 th overall Senior Clay Sullivan led the Vernonia High School boys to an 8 th place finish at the State Track and Field Championships at Euguene’s historic Hayward Field on May 18-19. Sullivan, the two-time defend- ing state champion in the 110 meter high hurdles, defended his title with a personal best time of 15.29 seconds. He also won the 300 meter intermediate hurdles for the first time in 42.04 sec- onds after placing 2 nd last year. Sul- livan added to his medal collection at this year’s event, placing 3 rd in the long jump, and taking 4 th in the triple jump. The boys team finished 8 th overall with 33 points Senior Andrew Vasquez placed 7 th in the 400 meters to make the podi- um. The boys 4x100 relay team of Mi- sha Yazmadov, Noah Rylands, Vasquez, and Josh Rice just missed the podium, finishing in 9 th place. Freshman Pete Crystal made it to state in the pole vault, but failed to clear the opening height of 9’ 6”. For the Vernonia girls, junior Odessa Roberts was the only one to make the podium placing 6 th in the high jump with a personal best of 4’ 10”. Adele Cousseau placed 9 th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:34.41, while the girls 4x400 meter relay team of Cous- seau, Lauren Ely, Hailey Reynolds, and Jenna Handegard placed 10 th . “Overall, we had a very suc- cessful season,” said head coach John Roady. “I’m already looking forward to cross country season to start up in August.” Head Start Recruiting Now Local Head Start programs are now recruiting 3 and 4 year olds for the 2018-19 school year. A large percentage of students will be selected in June. Staff suggests that parents apply now to have their family included in the first selec- tion. Head Start offers a comprehen- sive preschool experience free of charge to qualifying families. A developmen- tally appropriate classroom curriculum taught by certified teachers offers all children the opportunity to be kindergar- ten ready. The program offers parents op- portunities to learn and grow along with their children; receive guidance to com- plete medical, dental, and nutritional as- sessments; get on the job training in the early childhood field, and learn about lo- cal opportunities for the whole family. Children receive USDA ap- proved lunch plus breakfast and/or after- noon snack on each day of class. (Head Start and USDA are both equal opportu- nity providers.) The End of an Era continued from page 8 jump. “Clay is such a great natural athlete,” says Vernonia track coach Byron Brown. “Anyone who knows anything about track can’t believe this, but he’s never been coached in the high hurdles, and almost never practices it, because we have not had an adequate track facility. It’s a highly specialized event. And he’s a three time state cham- pion in that event – that tells you ev- erything you need to know about what a natural athlete he is. He’s also so in control of his emotions. I know he gets nervous, because everyone does, but he never shows it. He’s always loose and relaxed and then he just goes out and takes care of business.” Sullivan says his personal fa- vorite moments from his high school athletic career obviously include the 2016 State Championship. “Beating Knappa this year was by far the best moment though, even better than win- ning state,” said Sullivan. Logger Athletic Director Gor- don Jarman also had high praise for Sullivan. “I’ve been here since 2004 and he is the best athlete we’ve had here during that time, and we’ve had a lot of really good athletes,” said Jarman. “He and is parents have worked hard to get him to this elite level. A guy like Clay doesn’t come along very often.” Vernonia School Board Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month.
