4 letters to the editor/community bulletin board february1 2018 Readers Lend Their Voices... To the Editor, I am concerned that only one out of seven Citizen Planning Advisory Committees (CPACs) is active in Colum- bia County and that we have dropped the ball in this important aspect of land use planning. Extensive citizen participation has been the hallmark of the state’s land use planning program since 1984. Citi- zen participation is important to main- tain two-way communication between the public and planning officials. For several decades, seven CPACs met and provided citizen’s in- put. However, around 2005 the groups weakened until only one CPAC is still functioning. The Scappoose-Spitzen- berg CPAC still meets and works to pro- vide input on land use decisions such as housing subdivisions, industrial devel- opment, airport expansions, and storm water runoff. I hope you see the need for rebuilding citizen participation in our county’s land use administration and Planning Commission decisions. Columbia County needs to re- new its commitment to the CPAC pro- cess. I have personally spoken with several people who are interested in the CPAC process. Because we have new economic growth, this is a critical time, a tipping point for two-way communica- tion within the county’s land use plan- ning process. It’s up to us. Do you have time, on an irregular basis, to receive a copy of the land use applications being processed for your neighborhood? To answer that question, you’ll need more information. I urge you to stop by Land Development Services at the court house in St. Helens or contact them at (503) 397-7217 to re- quest more information. Columbia Humane Society Featured Pet When asked what was the one thing she wanted more than anything, Missy said that it was to have a nice quiet home, without young kids that she could feel comfortable in. This little lady is about 1 1 / 2 years old and has proven that she isn't overly fond of homes with loud noises and lots of activities. She prefers to spend her time lying in laps with minimal disruption. She has also been able to teach us that she prefers a very clean litter box that has a cover. Her litter box will come with her to her new home. Missy's adoption has been sponsored so her adoption fee will only be $75. If you are interested in meeting Missy please don't hesitate to call or email. We thank you all for the support. Please continue to donate to help kids like Missy. http://columbiahumane.com/support-us/donate/ 2084 Oregon Street, St. Helens, OR 97051 Phone: 503-397-4353 E-mail: info@columbiahumane.org Web: www.columbiahumane.org AA Meetings Open Meetings Mondays & Thursdays 6:30-7:30 pm Vernonia Christian Church 410 North Street Women’s Meeting Tuesdays 6:30-7:30 pm Vernonia Christian Church 410 North Street Vernonia’s Voice is published on the 1st and 3rd Thursday.
