8 december7 2017 Welcome to The Spirit of Christmas in Vernonia will host this fundraising event again this year. Please bring your homemade chili in a crockpot before 10:00 am. Judging starts at 10:30 am. $5 entry fee. $5 chili lunch may be purchased following the judging; includes roll, drink and cookie. Join us in our traditional small town celebration of the Christmas season. This annual event features traditions both new and old. We hope you will take time to enjoy the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of the holiday season as we celebrate Christmas throughout the community on Saturday, December 9th. Gingerbread House Show-Off, 11 am - 3:30 pm, Vernonia Grange – All entries must fit on a 13”x18” baking sheet; after that... anything goes! Stop by to admire the entries and vote; cash prizes awarded by People’s Choice for top three in 0-12 and 13+ categories. Winners announced at 4 pm. No entry fee. Sponsored by Vernonia Hands on Art Center. Downtown Business Window Display Contest – Make sure to stroll downdown to see all the local businesses who help make everything festive with storefront trees and window displays. Breakfast with Santa, 8:30-10 am, Vernonia Fire Station – Join Santa for this extra special pancake breakfast. 4 th Annual Ugly Sweater 5K Run/Walk, 9 am, Anderson Park – Find your best ugly Christmas sweater and take it for a tour around the Vernonia Lake. It’s a flat and fast 5k race; runners and walkers welcome. Entry fee is $20 for adults, $10 for youth and any students with ID, 10 and under free. Prizes for best sweater and swag for all! Christmas Tree Lighting, following the parade, Corner of Bridge St. and Weed Ave. – Join Santa & Mrs. Claus as we light the community Christmas tree. Meet Santa & Mrs. Claus, following the tree lighting, Blue House Café – Santa & Mrs. Claus will arrive in the lighted parade and then greet children at the Blue House Café. Chocolate Walk, 11 am - 4 pm, Downtown Businesses – Sample and purchase various chocolate treats at local businesses. Look for the big Hershey’s Kiss at participating shops. Lions Club Hot Cider, 11 am - 4 pm, Blue House Café – The Vernonia Lions Club will be serving free hot cider, as well as holding a raffle. Stocking Stuffer & Gift Show, 11 am - 5 pm, Vernonia Grange and Grace Family Fellowship – Stop by for holiday shopping and support local artists and craftspeople, along with local non-profits and local direct marketing vendors. Storytelling & Craft: “Mooseltoe,” 11 am, Vernonia Library Storytelling & Craft: “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” 12:30 pm, Blue House Café Storytelling & Craft: “The Polar Express,” 1:30 pm, Vernonia Grange Storytelling & Craft: “Olive, the Other Reindeer,” 2:30 pm, Grace Family Fellowship Christmas Cookie Bake-Off, 3 pm, Vernonia Grange – Entries must include 6-12 plated cookies. Adults (13+) and youth judged separately. Cash prizes awarded. Cookies must be delivered between 10 am and 3 pm; judging is at 3 pm and results announced at 4 pm. No entry fee. Storytelling: “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” 3:30 pm, R&S Market Contest Winners Announced, 4 pm, Vernonia Grange – Winners of the Lighted Home Decorating, Business Window Display, Chili Cook-off, Gingerbread House, and Cookie contests will be announced. Lighted Parade, 5:30 pm, State Avenue to City Hall – Lighted log trucks, lighted vehicles and lighted marchers are all welcome. Sign up at Napa; line up at 5 pm, parade starts at 5:30. Spaghetti Dinner and Auction, after tree lighting, Cabin in Vernonia (formerly the Scout Cabin) – Join the Vernonia Seventh Day Adventist Church congregation at this annual fundraiser. The dinner will benefit the Vernonia Cares Food Bank and the auction benefits the church’s renovation fund. Food Vendors and Fire Pits, 10 am - 6 pm Shay Park – Stop by Shay Park to warm up and grab a bite to eat. Winter Art Show, 10 am - 7 pm, Grey Dawn Gallery – See fine art and enjoy refreshments at this wonderful local gallery. The show features a selection of new images by landscape photographer Christopher Burkett. Coloring Contest, 11 am - 1 pm, Blue House Café – Great prizes for kids ages 3-12. Coloring Contest will be judged at 1:30 pm. Sponsored by the Vernonia Volunteer Ambulance Association. Chili Cook-Off & Feed, 11 am - 1 pm, Blue House Café – The Vernonia Volunteer Ambulance Association Horse & Buggy Rides with Donner, 12 - 3 pm, City Hall – Rick Hobart and his horse Donner will be available for buggy rides around town, starting and ending beside City Hall. Vernonia Dickens Carolers, 12 - 4 pm – Watch for these carolers in full Victorian costume, wandering the streets and spreading Christmas joy throughout the day. Wine Tasting, 2 - 7 pm, Bear Creek Pub – Stop by and join Wines of Oregon for a wine tasting event.
