Kids start up classes again, sports are begin- ning, and students are finding where they fit in at school. Personally, I’ve always known where I fit in - leadership class. Making posters, organizing blood drives, speaking in front of the school, I’ve al- ways loved helping make my yellow hallway at the Vernonia School a com- fortable environment for all. November is especially a chaotic month. With cross country, volleyball, and football state championships, winter sports starting up, and the long breaks, my interest in leadership makes it even crazier with the annual OASC confer- ence. OASC stands for Oregon Associa- tion of Student Councils. For those who may not know, I am Student Body Presi- dent of Vernonia High School. I lead by example for the underclassmen to imitate and later forge their own paths once I leave. OASC provides tons of different ideas and activities for schools from ev- ery division. Schools like Vernonia, all the way to North Medford come to Sea- side for this leadership conference. OASC takes place at the Seaside Convention Center and Seaside High, home of the Seagulls. But, for the night, it belongs to all high school leaders across the state. OASC has multiple motivation- al speakers attend every year for fall con- ference. This year it was Keith Hawkins and Jeff Eben. Last year they hosted Phil Boyte, who later came to Vernonia and participated in our Unity Week. There were various workshops hosted after one of the speakers. The workshops ranged from school spirit to how to become a better leader. Most of them were student led. Your very own Ben Schulte, Haley Lindsay, and Lily Buchanan hosted an idea share on unity! Go them! Ms. Willard is Vernonia High’s leadership teacher/advisor. She is such a kind and loving person, easily like a second mother to me. She went with us to OASC and ensured that we all had a safe and amazing time. 19 of us went on the trip - some were in leadership class, and some held an office. Brook Naron’s mom, Dawn Scott, was another very help- ful chaperone that accompanied us on our OASC adventure. Ms. Scott helped pre- pare our food and drive us around when we were too lazy to walk. A BIG shout out to you two! Overall, I think my peers and I took away a lot from OASC Fall Confer- ence. We learned that the llama store is expensive but worth it, that Roseburg has a HUGE student section, that we’re lucky to have the community we do, and that it was an experience we’ll never forget. Thank you to all that helped make this possible for my classmates and me. You are the reason I love helping people. Vernonia School Board Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month. The next School Board Meeting is scheduled for December 14 at 6:00 pm in the Schools Library. reach thousands of potential customers advertise here! email us: ads@vernoniasvoice.com call us: 503.367.0098 O noohmn O `hmshmf 503-429-7101 Shl Onoohmn 19025 Vnncr Qn`c Udqmnmh`, NQ 97064 BBL#90548 Visit US today for all your financial needs!
