4 letters to the editor/community bulletin board november2 2017 Readers Lend Their Voices... To the Editor, Democrats, it’s time to get in- volved - Become a Precinct Committee Person. Citizen involvement is the foundation for good government that effectively addresses the most critical needs of its citizenry. In our current po- litical climate, it is more important than ever that we become engaged in our political processes. In Oregon the most grassroots-level building block of the major political parties is the Precinct Committee Person (PCP). If you are a Democrat, and you are not happy with the current direction of politics, one of the most effective ways you can make a difference is to become a PCP. They are an important driving force behind reg- istering voters, getting the word out on candidates, developing the party’s po- sitions, and helping people understand the party’s processes and platform. A PCP is a representative of the precinct in which he or she resides (or an adjacent precinct). The precinct is the smallest political unit in the County. For each 500 registered voters in a pre- cinct there should be one PCP of each gender. A PCP can either be elected or appointed. Starting in early March of an even-numbered election year, Or- egon voters registered as Democrats for at least 180 days may file to be elected to fill PCP slots in the May primary election. After the May election the Central Committee can appoint regis- tered Democrats to vacant PCP slots. In Columbia County there are 33 precincts. There are PCP vacan- cies in almost all Precincts. No mat- ter where you live in Columbia County there will be a vacant PCP slot available to you either in the precinct you live in or an adjacent one. A Democratic PCP in Columbia County is a member of the Central Committee which is the gov- erning body of the Democratic Party of Columbia County; you have a voice and a vote when we make decisions that af- fect your community. In addition PCPs attend State Central Committee meet- ings and vote on official party business. The Democratic Party of Co- lumbia County normally meets once a month at 7:00 pm on the last Tuesday of the month, at the Kozy Korner Restau- rant, 371 Columbia Blvd., St. Helens. Meeting dates are sometimes changed to avoid conflicts with holidays. You can check on the party web-site; (http:// www.columbiademocrats.org/) to con- firm meeting time and view a meeting agenda. This is a critical time in Ameri- can history. The election of Donald Trump as our President should make us all ask ourselves; what are the val- ues that truly make America great? What are the values that we as Ameri- can citizens should be standing up for? America’s greatness is not an entitle- ment. It is an inheritance each gen- eration must protect and strengthen. If you share the core Democratic values of liberty, pursuit of happiness, justice, common good, equality, truth, diversity, and that the power of the government comes from the people, then I hope you will come to one of our meetings. Greg Pettit Chair, Democratic Party of Columbia County To the Editor, The VEF Sprouts team would like to thank our community that con- tinues to encourage and support fun opportunities, the teachers for their en- couragement of Sprouts and our vision, the students for attending, the parents for taking the time to bring their chil- dren, the volunteers for their time and positive energy and the following busi- nesses for their support of our recent Fall Carnival: R&S Market, Vernonia True Value, Vernonia Auto Parts, West Coast Road Construction, Martin Arms, Vernonia Florist, Vernonia’s Voice, and Out on a Limb. It has been 5 years since an or- ganization had put on a carnival and we were excited to take on the challenge. Seeing the school commons fill up with friendly faces made it all worth it! We are in our second year as an organization that is pulling together the community, school and parents. We could not do what we are doing without the combined efforts and support from everyone. We look forward to more fun in the future! My name is Gemma, I am a black pitbull/boxer mix and I weigh about 65 lbs. I came to the shelter as a stray; someone was very neglectful of me and my skin looks awful. I am on the mend because these won- derful people took good care of me. Gemma is extremely loving. She has a very rough play style and would do best as an only dog. After all she's been through she deserves all of the attention! Please stop by and meet her and take her to your forever home.
