Helen Marie Hiveley Helen Marie Hiveley, 82, died peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday, July 23, 2017 in her new apartment at lovely Deerfield Village in Milwaukie, Oregon. Many family and friends visited her there from near and far, and in her recent stays at Tuality Hospital and Avamere Hillsboro as well as in her cherished home in Vernonia. Helen Marie Vaughn was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma August 11, 1934, to parents Newell and Opal Vaughn. At the age of 3, the family left their farm and traveled west to California where Helen worked alongside her fam- ily on area produce farms. She received her education in Southern California and graduated from Indio High School, with a semester at Biola Bible College, Los Angeles. Helen’s dear cousin Roger Kaye introduced his Navy shipmate to her in San Diego and the sparks did fly. Months of sweetheart letters crossed the Pacific Ocean and charted their course of future plans for a home and family of their own. Helen married Virgil Duane Hiveley on January 2, 1955 in Los Ange- les, California where they began a new life together, raising four children with many family and friends in and out of each other’s homes. Virgil’s lifelong de- sire to return to Oregon brought them to Vernonia in 1974, with other family and friends to become part of their home. “Sweet Home Vernonia” it was and is. Helen retired from bookkeeping at West Oregon Electric in Vernonia in 1992, with previous accounting work for ABC Unified School District and Pepsi Cola Corporation in California. Crossword puzzles were always a favorite, plus sewing, reading and staying up on news and current events. Previous recreational activities included golf and jazzercise in Vernonia, arts and crafts classes in Vernonia and Califor- nia, scorekeeping for her children’s ball games, Little League newsletters, card games with family and friends, plus in their early married years, square dancing and bowling leagues with her husband Virgil. As a young girl Helen enjoyed softball, dancing, and church choir. She loved the Lord and held a lifelong faith in him. The wife of a U.S. Navy Mili- tary Veteran and heart strong patriot of the U.S.A., Helen encouraged the re- sponsibility of citizens to exercise their voting privilege. Helen was preceded in death by parents Opal and Newell Vaughn, daughter Sheri Wilson, brother Jack Vaughn, sisters Florence Fowler, Judy Verner, and half-sister Virginia Vaughn.
