city/community news february2 2017 5 1 st Annual Father & Daughter Country Ball Local fathers and daughters will have a chance to spend an evening together at the 1 st Annual Father & Daughter Country Ball. This new event will be held at the Grace Family Fellowship Church gymnasium on Tuesday, March 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Fathers and daughters of all ages are welcome to attend. Cost is free. The ball will feature dancing and line dancing lessons, a raffle and games with prizes, craft tables, locally baked snacks and drinks, and professional photos for purchase. Decorations and table centerpieces will be provided by Vernonia Florist. The dance is the brain child of Rose and Jon Nelson. Jon Nelson attended a similar event in Carlton last year and thought it might be fun to try it in Vernonia. The Vernonia Transfer Station is open on the 2nd and 4th Saturday from 8am-2pm February 11 & 25 March 11 & 25 Dates and times are subject to change due to weather “This is about our community and making our community strong through our dads and daughters,” explains Rose Nelson. “I hope dads and daughters of ALL ages will attend.” Fathers are encouraged to dress up in their finest country duds and daughters can wear their finest evening wear, whatever that may be, whether it’s princess dresses or dress up rodeo wear. “The daughters should wear whatever makes them feel beautiful,” says Wendi Livengood, who is helping organize the event. A dress drive is being organized for any of the ladies that might need a dress. “We’ll gather donated dresses and then all get together the week before so the girls can try on dresses and pick something out,” says Livengood. The plan is to then pass those dresses on to Vernonia City Council Meetings and Closures City Council Meetings are scheduled for 7:00 pm: Monday, February 6, 2017 Tuesday, February 21, 2017 City Closures are scheduled for: Monday, February 20, 2017 Presidents’ Day Holiday Dates and times subject to change Where do you read the Voice? Rose Nelson and Livengood point out that the dance is only for fathers and daughters; moms are not invited unless they would like to volunteer and help with the event. “There won’t be any meddlesome moms,” says Nelson with a laugh. “I’m hoping to get some volunteers this way, because they’re going to want to be snooping! I wanted to go to the one in Carlton, but I wasn’t allowed. So I had to volunteer. I think it’s a wonderful idea.” The hope is that the ball will grow and become an annual event.
