schools january5 2017 11 VHS Winter Sports Report Boys Basketball – The Loggers are off to a very good start and seem to have righted the ship after falling to #2 ranked Western Mennonite on December 12. The Loggers, currently ranked #6 and 8-1 on the season, beat Neah- Kah-Nie 64-45 on December 17 and then won the St. Paul Holiday Tourna- ment, easily defeating Monroe 84-56 and Willamette Valley Christian 83-28. The Loggers picked up another North- west League win, beating Faith Bible 76-25 on January 3, and were scheduled to face #10 Knappa on January 4. Head coach David Weller says the team is playing and shooting ex- tremely well, especially Tristan Adams, Brett Elliott, and Clay Sullivan. Sulli- van broke Weller’s own school record of 7 three-point shots, hitting 8 earlier in the season; Adams topped that with 9 against Willamette Valley Christian. El- liott has really been using his size and strength to get inside, play aggressively and attack the rim, and help the Loggers big man, Luke McCallum with rebound- ing. McCallum has improved this year and is playing more consistently. Weller said the easy wins in the Holiday Tournament allowed him to give some valuable playing time to some of his bench players. “Our bench guys got to play a lot, and in order for us to go far this year, those bench guys have to be able to come in and be ready,” said Weller. Blake Clark has really been contributing, spelling Sullivan at point guard and playing strong defense, and sophomore Jake Handegard has been improving in the front court and had good success in the Holiday Tourna- ment, scoring, rebounding, and defend- ing. “We have some of the best talent in the state, it’s just important that they all keep showing up and playing hard each night,” said Weller. The Loggers have some big up- coming match-ups against league oppo- nents that are also highly ranked on the state level, facing #8 Columbia Chris- tian on January 10 and currently ranked #1 Life Christian on January 12; both games are at home. “These will be good games for us to measure where we are,” said Weller. The Loggers will also travel to Gaston on January 14 and then face Del- phian at home on January 19. Wrestling – The Loggers took 4 th place at the Clatskanie Tournament on Decem- ber 29 and are preparing for the Pac-Rim Tournament on January 6-7. At Clatskanie, head coach Chris Barnes said Storm Henson won at 152, defeating a tough opponent from Scap- poose in an exciting match, before beat- ing teammate Josh Rice in the fi nals. Mekhi Williams took second at 126 with a good performance. Amanda Rose Si- card won 3 of 5 matches at 120 and Lena Jacobsen continues to impress, winning most of her matches against other girls, and wrestling well when she faces boys on the mat. Justin Fletcher wrestled re- ally well on his way to placing third, showing good pace, intensity, and pow- er. Barnes has a number of young wrestlers who continue to improve and contribute points to the team in tourna- ments, and mentioned Austin Sicard, Jacob Pasko, Elijah and Isiah Bozied, James Watson, and Heppner Forester. He also mentioned Gavin Everett, a ju- nior wrestling for the fi rst time, who is a good athlete but is still learning the sport. The Loggers have an upcoming home meet against Knappa on January 18. Girls Basketball – The Lady Loggers have played what is probably the tough- est schedule in 2A basketball early this season. They have a 4-5 record over all, but have played four of the top seven ranked teams in the state, losing to #1 Monroe, #2 Western Mennonite, and #7 Kennedy, before most recently suffering a 51-44 loss to Northwest League rival, and #4 ranked Faith Bible on January 3. In league play Vernonia is 2-1 and had a big matchup against Knappa scheduled for January 4. “Our tough schedule has given us a real good idea of where we’re at, and what we need to work on,” said head coach Jim Krahn. “We had several of those games where we were short some players, so that caused us some issues with how we were able to play and our substitution rotation, but the girls are working extremely hard and are continu- ing to get better and I think we have a bright future for the rest of the season.” Krahn mentioned the strong play of his three senior captains, Payton Wolf, Vivianna Bustamonte, and Megan Ely, and also noted the improved play and contributions of freshmen Lauren Ely and Jordon Walters. “Lauren and Jordon’s improvements as the season has progressed will have a lot to do with our success and give us more depth.” Upcoming VHS Sports Events Boys and Girls Basketball F 1/6 T 1/10 Th 1/12 S 1/14 T 1/17 F 1/20 @ Nestucca vs Columbia Christian vs Life Christian (Boys Only) @ Gaston vs Delphian @ City Christian Wrestling F-S F-S W Th 1/6-7 1/13-14 1/18 1/26 @ Pac Rim Tournament @ Oregon Classic vs Knappa vs Neah-Kah-Nie/ Yahill Carlton Vernonia’s Voice is published on the 1st and 3rd Thursday.
