10 december1 2016 Welcome to The Spirit of Christmas in Vernonia Join us in our traditional small town celebration of the Christmas season, something we call “The Spirit of Christmas in Vernonia.” This annual event features traditions both new and old. We hope you will take time to enjoy the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of the holiday season as we celebrate Christmas throughout the community on Saturday, December 3 rd . Lighted Home Decorating Contest - Decorate your home and property and light up your neighborhood to win credit on your electric bill from West Oregon Electric. Register at R&S Market. Judging will take place on Friday evening, December 2 nd . Downtown Business Window Display Contest - Make sure to stroll downdown to see all the local businesses who help make everything festive with storefront trees and window displays. Sponsored by the Vernonia Area Chamber of Commerce. 3 rd Annual Ugly Sweater 5K Run/Walk, 9:30, Anderson Park - Race goes from Anderson Park, around Vernonia Lake, and back. Registration at 9:00, race starts at 9:30. Entry fee is $20 for adults, $10 for youth, 10 and under free. Pre-register at their Facebook page: “Third Annual Ugly Sweater Run.” Sponsored by the Vernonia Area Chamber of Commerce. Storytelling & Craft: “The Mitten,” 11:00, Vernonia Library Storytelling & Craft: “Gingerbread Friends,” 12:30, Blue House Café Christmas Cookie Bake-Off, 1:30, Blue House Café Entries must include 1 dozen plated cookies. Adults (13+) and youth judged separately. Cash prizes awarded. Registration at 11:00, judging at 1:30. No entry fee. Contest Winners Announced, 2:00, Blue House Café- Winners of the Lighted Home Decorating, Business Window Display, Chili Cook-off, Gingerbread House, and Cookie contests will be announced. Storytelling & Craft: “The Elf on the Shelf,” 2:30, Blue House Café Storytelling: “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” 3:30, R&S Market Lighted Parade, 5:30, State Avenue to City Hall - Lighted log trucks, lighted vehicles and lighted marchers are all welcome. Sign up at Napa; line up at 5:00, parade starts at 5:30. Christmas Tree Lighting, following the parade, Vernonia Realty - Join Santa & Mrs. Claus as we light the Christmas tree at the corner of Bridge Street and Weed Avenue. Meet Santa & Mrs. Claus, following the tree lighting, Blue House Café - Santa & Mrs. Claus will arrive in the lighted parade and greet children at the Blue House Café. Horse & Buggy Rides with Donner, 11-3, City Hall - Rick Hobart and his horse Donner will be available for buggy rides around town, starting and ending beside City Hall. Vernonia Dickens Carolers, 11-4 - Watch for these carolers in full Victorian costume, wandering the streets and spreading Christmas joy throughout the day. Spaghetti Dinner and Auction, after tree lighting, Cabin in Vernonia (formerly the Scout Cabin) - Join the Vernonia Seventh Day Adventist Church congregation at this annual fundraiser. The dinner will benefit the Vernonia Cares Food Bank and the auction benefits the church’s renovation fund. Tavern Time: Christmas Trivia, 8:30, All In Pub - Grab a hot or cold beverage and join us for some fun and laughs, and learn something while you’re at it! Christmas Meal Specials, all day - Stop by these local restaurants during the day or evening for a special Christmas Meal deal: La Cabana, Black Iron Grill, Mariolino’s, Cedar Side Inn, and All In Pub Christmas in the Country Bazaar, and Vernonia Homebased Business Bazaar, 10-5, Vernonia Schools Commons - Stop by for holiday shopping and support local artists and craftspeople, along with local non-profits and school groups. Local direct marketing vendors will also be gathered together with their products to help you with your holiday shopping. Wine Tasting & Pairing, 10-6, Black Iron Grill - Stop by and join Wines of Oregon for a wine tasting event. Black Iron Grill will serve specials all day that will pair with the wines being offered. Winter Art Show, 10-7, Grey Dawn Gallery - See fine art and enjoy refreshments at this wonderful local gallery. The show features a selection of new images by landscape photographer Christopher Burkett. Coloring Contest, 11-1:30, Blue House Café - Great prizes for kids ages 3-12. Coloring Contest will be judged at 1:30 pm. Sponsored by the Vernonia Volunteer Ambulance Association. Petting Zoo & Nativity Scene, 11-4, Creatures Pet Store - Live animals and a vintage nativity scene, that honors Tessie and Edison Aldrich, help tell the Christmas story. Chocolate Walk, 11-4, Downtown Businesses - Sample and purchase various chocolate treats at local businesses. Look for the big Hershey’s Kiss at participating shops. Lions Club Hot Cider, 11-4, Blue House Café - The Vernonia Lions Club will be serving free hot cider, as well as holding a raffle. Gingerbread House Show-Off, 11-4, Blue House Café - All entries must fit on a 13”x18” baking sheet; after that... anything goes! Stop by to admire the entries and vote; cash prizes awarded by People’s Choice for top three in 0-12 and 13+ categories. No entry fee. Chili Cook-Off & Feed, 11-4, Blue House Café The Vernonia Volunteer Ambulance Association will host this fundraising event again this year. Please bring your homemade chili in a crockpot at 10:30 am. Chili can be hot, veggie, turkey, or traditional... as long as it’s chili! Judging starts at 11:00 am. Great prizes awarded in the following age groups: 16 & under, 17-30, and 31+. $10 entry fee. $5 chili lunch may be purchased following the judging; includes cornbread or biscuit, drink and cookie.
