8 schools november3 2016 VHS Fall Sports Report Volleyball - The Lady Loggers made their sixth straight trip to the state playoffs under head coach Teresa Williams after finishing second in the Northwest League playoff tournament. Vernonia finished their season strong. After falling to Delphian 1-3 on October 4, the Lady Loggers won their final four matches of the regular season, defeating Columbia Christian, Neah-Kah-Nie, Knappa and Nestucca, all by 3-0 scores. In the league playoffs, Vernonia beat Nestucca 3-0 before earning some revenge against Delphian with a 3-2 victory and earning a spot in the final, where the Lady Loggers fell to Gaston 1-3. Vernonia finished their season with an 8-3 league record and were 14-8 overall this year. In the state tournament Vernonia once again received a difficult first round draw after being seeded #16 and had to travel to top- ranked Culver where they lost in three straight games 20-25, 13-25, 15-25. Coach Williams said overall the team played good defense all season and their blocking improved throughout the season with Megan Ely and Morgan Harral leading the way; Williams said Ely played especially well in the losing effort against Culver in the state matchup. “As the season progressed we got better at reading the other team,” said Williams. Williams noted Coleman’s improvement this season, especially her play on defense. Serving was a team strength this season. In the back line the team was lead by Payton Wolf and Kailia Jackson. Following the league tournament Wolf was named First Team All League, setter Joyce Everett and Whitton were named Second Team, and Walters and Harral were named Honorable Mention. Cross Country - The season came to an end at the 5K district state- qualifying meet at Bush Park in Salem on October 27. The girls finished in 3rd place and missed qualifying for the state meet by one place. Head coach Byron Brown said the squad was led by foreign exchange student Kathy Will who ran a strong, inspired race and finished 11th overall— running a very impressive 23:59, continued on page 11 We saddle shoe.
