To the Editor, As the chair of the Vernonia School District Board, I would like to encourage everyone to vote for the Vernonia Schools bond measure on the November ballot. This measure will allow the district to refinance most of our debt which is currently paid out of our general fund, freeing up those funds so that they can be used for the education of our children. It will also make our district eligible for $2.7 million in matching funds from the state and allow the District to make much needed improvements and additions such as adding classrooms for art and metal fab/welding, installing playground equipment at both the Vernonia campus and at the Mist school, and construction of a football and track complex on the Vernonia schools campus. While I am always hesitant to ask more from the taxpayers, I am asking for your support as all this can all be done at a very low price: most taxpayers would see an increase of only a few dollars a month. With the matching funds available now from the state, there is no better time to make this commitment to our children’s education and the District’s infrastructure. Please join me in ensuring that our schools and community remain vital. a minute of your time and let you know about the fundraisers we will be doing this school year. Your help and support for our school is greatly appreciated! There will be no collection bins. Please turn the materials into me personally, you can also give the materials to your child to give to me, or turn them into the school office and someone will make sure I get them. For your convenience you can also mail donations to the school. If it is not on the list below, then it is no longer being collected. We are collecting the following for the 2016-2017 school year: • Box Tops Labels • Campbell Soup Labels (upc part) This is the last year! At the end of the school year on June 8th, 2017 this program will be terminated by Campbells. • Cell Phones & Ink Cartridges • Flav R Pac & Santiam Labels (upc part) • Capri Sun Drink Pouches (don’t throw them away after lunch) • Writing Instruments (Paper Mate, Sharpie, & Expo) those dry erase pens that you use • Colgate (toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes, packaging) • Scotch Tape (dispensers & cores) has to be the brand Scotch All the money collected from fundraising/recycling this specific school year will be going towards elementary and high school physical education Brett Costley equipment. Teacher To the Editor, I’m sure a lot of you felt like I did when the new school was being built. I thought they should have been happy with four walls and a roof. Instead we have this real nice school with a huge debt that we now have to deal with. I attended all twelve grades at Vernonia schools and so did our two children, and felt we all received a good education. I think this generation should also receive the best education we can give them. The school needs to get that “monkey” off their back, so they can put all their focus on educating the kids, instead of worrying about how they’re going to make that huge loan payment each year. I hope they will also address the problem as to why so many people haven chosen to home school. In the past there was a motto, “Vernonia, a School to be Proud of.” Upcoming Events Columbia City’s Show & Shine - Saturday, September 17, 8:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Columbia City School.
