12 obituaries september1 2016 In Memory of... Jack Lee Odam Jack Lee Odam, 88, of Vernonia, passed away in the comfort of his home on August 21, 2016 with his daughters by his side. Son of Arthur and Lea- on Odam, Jack was born in Wi- nona, Missouri in rural Shan- non County on October 25, 1927. He was the 4th of 5 chil- dren; Myrl, Bill, Helen, Jack and Gene. The family moved to Vernonia when he was 16 years old to work at the O-A Mill where we worked until he joined the Army in 1945-1946. After serving in the Army, Jack returned to Verno- nia and married Mary “Lor- raine” Crowston in 1952. The couple had three girls; Mary Anne, Jackie and Kathy, and later divorced after raising them together. He remained in Vernonia the rest of his life, working for the County Road Department, Crown Zellerbach, Northwest Road Builders, Lynn Buckner and Mike Pihl. Jack had such a passion for work- ing that he continued building roads for 22 summers after he “retired.” Jack was a wonderful, humble and simple man who “had a great life,” which he told his girls in his final days. He was adored by his family and loved spending time with his daughters, grandchildren, great- grandchildren, friends and fam- ily. He enjoyed being outdoors, having BBQs, taking the family on yearly fishing trips, mush- room hunting, going for walks in the woods, caring for his land and animals, tending his garden and sitting down with friends for a beer in town. Dad/Grandpa will al- ways be remembered by those of us who knew and loved him. Although we will miss him, his smile, his giggle, his stories, his teasing, his accent, his love and so much more, we will take con- solation in the good feelings our memories bring us and knowing he really did have a great life. Jack is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings. He is survived by his daugh- ters: Mary Anne Odam, Jackie Duschanek, Kathy and Dave Swank; grandchildren: Jaime and Mark Vealey, Jeff and Ai- ran Ceballos, Brandon and Me- lissa Groeneveld, Meaghan and Jason Kolar, Casey Duschanek and girlfriend Tarna Sevelstad, Shawna and Ken Parris; great- grandchildren: Taylor, Colton, Brogan, Gavin, Gage, Blake, Emilia, Caysen, Charlie, Tauri and Kendra. Conger, 75, a former resident of the Verno- nia community, late of Yachats, died Wednesday afternoon, Au- gust 17, 2016 at the Samaritan Pacific Community Hospital in Newport, Oregon. Janet Lewellyn Con- ger was born April 18, 1941 in Forest Grove, Oregon, the daughter of the late Harvey C. Ridling and Dorena G. (Ander- son) Ridling. She was raised and received her education in the Vernonia community, hav- ing been a graduate of the Ver- nonia Union High School Class of 1959. She was united in mar- riage to Jack Ray Conger on July 20, 1974 in Vancouver, Washington. They celebrated their 42 nd wedding anniversary this past July. Following their marriage they resided in the Vernonia community until 2008 when they moved to Yachats, where they have resided since. Janet had worked in the high-tech industry for Sawyer’s View Master in Beaverton and later for Tektronix in Beaverton in inventory control for twenty years, until she retired in 1999. While living in the Ver- nonia community Janet was ac- tive with the search and rescue team. Since moving to Yachats, she had volunteered with Sea Aire Assisted Living Center for several years. Among her special in- terests she enjoyed caring for her flowers, knitting, crafts, and the beach. Janet also loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and she was an active member of her church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Dorena Ridling. Survivors include her husband Jack Conger of the family home in Yachats, Or- egon; her son and daughter-in- law Duane and Kris Ostrander of Tualatin, Oregon; her daugh- ter and son-in-law Mary Denise and Jim Holewa of Kalama- zoo, Michigan; her brother and sister-in-law Loren and Ilona Ridling of Waldport, Oregon; and her sister and brother-in- law Glynis and Jack Almond of Gaston, Oregon. Also surviving are her five grandchildren and spouses; Devin Tapia of Salem, Oregon; Jillian Tapia of Kalamazoo, Michigan; Eric and Hannah Ostrander of Humble, Texas; Shane Ostrander of Tualatin, Oregon; and Kelsey Ostrander of Tualatin, Oregon; her two great-grandchildren Logan Tapia and Madison Tapia; and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remembrances may be con- tributions to the American Can- death by her parents, Harvey and Mae Dungan, her daughter Robyn, and by her two sisters, Donna and Rosemarie. Survivors include her two sons and a daughter-in-law; Scott Skene and Kathy Boutilier of Beaverton, Oregon, and Tom Skene of Gresham, Oregon. Also surviving are her two grandchildren and a spouse; Alanna Boutilier-Skene and James Linder of Beaverton, Oregon; and Shara and Daniel Margery A. “Midge” Skene of Las Vegas, Nevada; Skene and her nieces and nephews; Dawn, Jan, J.P., Rosemary, Tony, and Chad.
