14 obituaries august18 2016 In Memory of... Gary A. Ryan Gary A. Ryan, 60, a longtime resident of the Vernonia community, died Tuesday afternoon, August 2, 2016 at his home. A Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled at a later date. Gary Allan Ryan was born November 23, 1955 in San Jose, California, the son of the late Robert Wesley Ryan and Alice Theresa (Dufault) Ryan. He was raised and received his education in San Jose, California, having been a graduate of the Union High School Class of 1973. He was united in marriage to Claudia Jane King on March 9, 1991 in the First Christian Church in Vernonia, Oregon. They celebrated their 24 th wedding anniversary this past March. Following their marriage they have made their home in the Vernonia community. Gary had worked as a Quality Inspectator in the hi tech and manufacturing industries, including Atari, Inc. He had worked in the capacity for over forty years, until he retired in 2013. Among his special interests he enjoyed home remodeling projects. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Alice Ryan and his sister, Gail Ryan and his brother, Bruce Ryan. Survivors include his wife, Claudia Ryan of the family home in Vernonia; his four children and their spouses, Justin and Annabelle Jones of Burlingame, California; Jessica and John Douglas of Cedar Hills, Oregon; Tegan and Billy Smith of Portland; and Tyson Ryan of Vernonia; and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Donna Espinosa of Sacramento, California; Michael and Beverly Ryan of Cupertino, California; and Colleen Follas of Salem, Oregon. Also surviving are his six grandchildren, Raif Douglas, Adalynn Douglas, Ari Smith, Sebastian Smith, Vivian Jones and Jack Jones and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Smithsonian Institute in his memory. William (Bill) Otto Kretschmer January 7, 1927 – July 24 2016 Richard E. Jones To all those who knew and loved him, please join us as we celebrate the life of Richard E. Jones, Saturday, August 27 at 2:00 pm at the Vernonia Christian Church, 410 North Street. Michael C. Fetherston February 1,1950 – August 7, 2016 Bill grew up in Nebraska. He moved to Oregon as a young man with his family (father William A., mother Rose, brother John). Bill was a veteran of WWII. He served in the Navy Shore Patrol. Bill’s hobbies were the Christian Church, fishing, hunting, gardening, and his dogs. Bill (age 21 years) married Eunice Osborne (age 17 years) and had four children, Michael William, Patrick Louis, Kathie Jean, and Matthew Thomas. Bill and Eunice also parented Frank Hill and Chong Tassin and many other foster children over the years. In 1968 Bill and Eunice took a chance and purchased a 27 acre run- down farm in Vernonia. Bill lived with his family in Vernonia until his death. Bill was an awesome father, always giving good Christian based advise. He took his family on vacations and taught his kids how to fish, hunt, and most important, how to love Jesus! In 1980 Bill was filled with the Holy Spirit when he accepted Jesus Christ as his lord and savior and dedicated his life to Jesus. Bill held many positions in the Christian Church. He was a decon and elder most of his Christian life. Bill would often preach the Sunday message if the pastor was unavailable. Bill’s art talent was much appreciated. Every year he would build all the props needed for the vacation bible school program. Bill and his family were at most church work days, potlucks, and meetings. Bill was dedicated to helping the Christian Church family. Bill is survived by his wife Eunice and children Michael, Patrick, Kathie, Matthew and Frank Hill. Michael Fetherston was born on Wednesday, February 1, 1950 in Prineville, Oregon to Clifford and Violet Fetherston. Shortly after he moved to Vernonia, Oregon where he grew up and graduated high school. It was during this time that he met and later married Patty Hahmeyer and had two children. He worked various jobs around the area including logging for Crown Zellerbach, as a police officer, and at the local True Value hardware store. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and cribbage player and also enjoyed razor clamming. He passed away Sunday, August 7, 2016 at OHSU in Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his two children, Robert Fetherston and Angie Sineth; daughter in law Antoinette; son in law Michael; two granddaughters, Sara and Carly Rhodes; his sister Judy Bates; and numerous nieces and nephews.
